When most people think of Santa Claus, they think of words
like "jolly", "mysterious", "magical", and "cheerful". Times are changing,
however, and so are the adjectives that people use to describe Santa. Some
people now characterize him as "rude", "offensive", "fat", and "disgusting".
Why the change? Well, it seems that Jolly St. Nicholas has gotten himself into
some trouble this year.
No Ho Ho Ho!
This year, Santa's first offense was his signature statement:
"ho ho ho". In Sydney, Australia, there is an attempt to
change Santa's saying from "ho ho ho" to "ha ha ha". Why the change? The word
"ho" may be considered offensive to women! According to the Urban Dictionary,
the word "ho" has several meanings, all of which denigrate women. Specifically,
a "ho" is a slang term for a prostitute. Advocates for the change to "ha ha ha"
believe that this happy, non-offensive term would be less frightening and
intimidating for children who are having their first Santa experience. Needless
to say, many Santas in training are outraged.
Yes, some children are afraid of Santa Claus, but I doubt
it's because of his use of the word "ho". Heck, I've even seen a picture of me
as a baby, crying and screaming on Santa's lap. But was it because of his
language? Probably not. It may have had something to do with the fact that I
was being held by a strange man with a crazy beard and odd-looking suit, but I
can't be positive.
Who's Naughty Now?
As a woman, I can say that I've never been offended by Santa's
"ho ho ho" - and I still yell "Hi, Santa!"
whenever I see St. Nick at the mall. Still, maybe that's because I haven't
talked to him on the Internet. Last year, Microsoft encouraged kids to talk to
Santa online by adding northpole@live.com to their Windows Live Messenger
contact lists. But don't try to chat with Microsoft's version of Santa this
year.
Santa's chatting days ended after he made some racy
statements to a couple of kids in the U.K. After being invited to eat
pizza, Santa responded by saying "You want me to eat what?!? It's fun to talk
about oral sex, but I want to chat about something else." The uncle of the
girls who invited Santa for pizza was not amused. The conversation ended with
the uncle and Santa calling each other a name that is more offensive than the
term "ho". Even after cleaning up Santa's language, Microsoft did not feel
comfortable putting the Santa chat feature back online.
I'm not sure what's happening with Santa this year, but I'm
pretty sure he's still on the naughty list!
What do you think?
- Is Santa getting a bad reputation?
- Is 2007 the beginning of the decline of Santa?
- How can Santa get back into our good graces?
