Pirate Hunters

Posted December 23, 2007 7:22 AM

Robot boats are being recruited to chase pirates on the high seas. Both Israel and Singapore have deployed the Protector — a 30 ft Unmanned Surface Vehicle equipped with machine gun — in their efforts to stop piracy. A British defense firm has built an unarmed jet-ski sized USV, designed for intruder investigation. In this capacity, it could scout unidentified craft, such as the raft that attacked the USS Cole in the waters of Yemen in 2000.

What happens when the pirates get hold of a 'Protector' and re-program it ? They may be low tech pirates at present, but it could go the way of internet hacking etc. Built in the West then cheaply copied in the far East - it could become a cruise holiday nightmare !

Any boat could be captured. Manned or not.

Just as the street criminal can out gun the street cop the pirates can out gun the maritime cop.
If the prize is considered worth it.
