More MP isn't necessarily better for digital cameras

Posted December 28, 2007 1:47 PM

From Coolest Gadgets:

With the latest point and shoot digital cameras pushing twelve mega pixels, one would assume that digital picture quality couldn't be better. But that isn't necessarily the case. According to Image Engineering, a company that does testing of digital cameras for photo magazines in Germany, the quality of digital pictures has steadily decreased since the state of the art was six megapixels back in 2004.

That news heartens me.

Of course there is nothing quite like the old film 21/4 x 21/4 inch format photos, which are taken at the molecular stage, rather than pixel size

Kind Regards....

Hello FlyBoy,

If you look carefully at the graphic, just below the image on the rear screen, you can read the Make as "Hasselblad".

These are really an excellent Brand, all highest quality.

Kind Regards....

Assuming the total sensor areas are the same, having more pixels should not degrade the basic information. So the problems will be arising either in reading the data or in compression algorithm. Looking at the picture, it appears the problem is added noise. Assuming reasonable design for the read** amplifiers, increasing the data should not cause additional noise problems.
I suspect that the problem is that the compression algorithms are not well-matched to the higher-resolution images.

**Unfortunately, this is not necessarily the case if the design is driven by marketing specmanship rather than by image quality.
