Mobile Phone Monitors Health and Weather

Posted December 30, 2007 6:27 AM

Nokia has unveiled a concept it calls the Eco Sensor. It consists of a mobile phone plus a separate wirelessly-connected remote sensing unit, to be worn on the wrist or from a neck strap made of solar cells. The user could choose what the sensor monitors — ranging from personal data, such as heart rate, to environmental or weather data.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Sensors & Switches, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Sensors & Switches today.

Is this really practical, are people really going to wear this necklace of solar panels or wristband in everyday life. Are people going to go into work with this neck strap? Could people not take this sensor off and leave it somewhere by mistake. Could children get hold of it and damage it thinking that it is a toy? My big question is why and where did they get the idea? I do not think this idea is feasible and will most likely be scrapped unless a better concept can be conceived.

This idea was first floated here in Australia (look up new inventors ABC tv ) I think I saw the prototype on the show... The idea behind it was to monitor people with a medical history and the phone would analysis the data and would either pass on critcal information to an emergency call centre or their doctor. Where the specialist could either start medical response of reassure the patient it was not dangerous. So yes if you want a 24 hr / 7 day week heart monitor and your concerned you may drop dead before calling the ambulance then this will call for you...
