Web Icon Set To Be Discontinued

Posted December 28, 2007 6:12 PM

From BBC News | Technology | World Edition:

The browser that helped kick-start the commercial web is to cease development because of lack of users. Netscape Navigator, now owned by AOL, will no longer be supported after 1 February 2008, the company has said. In the mid-1990s the browser was used by more than 90% of the web population, but numbers have slipped to just 0.6%. In particular, the browser has faced competition from Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE), which is now used by nearly 80% of all web users. "While internal groups within AOL have invested a great deal of time and energy in attempting to revive Netscape Navigator, these efforts have not been successful in gaining market share from Microsoft's Internet Explorer," said Tom Drapeau on the company's blog.

It was expected, since most Code Writers and users have migrated to Mozilla Firefox.

I resisted the move to the free and Open Source Firefox, until I finally tried it from:

http://www.mozilla.org/download.html

Once tried, I never went back to Internet Explorer....

It is remarkable how much better Firefox is. I've never seen a company as determined to alienate its user base as Microsoft seems to be with useless features.

Is there a more chilling moment on a computer then when you're trying to do something and the Microsoft program you're using decides to help?

Microsoft Word: Oh, you forgot to capitalize that word, I'll do it for you

User: No that's ok, you really didn't need to do that, in this case it should be lower case, I'll just change it back.

Microsoft Word: Oh, you changed it back, let me fix that for you again

User: Damn it Microsoft, just let me keep it lower case

Microsoft Word: Can't let you do that user, my programming clearly indicates that this should be capitalized

User: Ok, fine, I'm just going to delete this period before the word that is making you capitalize it, then I"m going to finish this sentence with a period, finally I'll insert the period I just deleted.

Microsoft Word: I'm confused. Very well, you win this time user, but it won't be so easy when you upgrade to Vista.

They seriously need to come out with a windows light before some other company (Apple, Google) comes along and builds a better viable OS.

That's what the people (I think they're people, anyway...) at MiniSquishy refer to as an "undocumented feature". How hard would it BE fer cryin' out loud, to come up with a better OS than Windows? Calling it merely "better" would be damning by faint praise if it worked as much better than IE as Navigator always did (and which I'd still be using if it weren't so hard to replace IE). I used Navigator, BTW, back in the days when it was called "Magellein"... As in Ferdinand...

I just came a cropper yesterday afternoon in a Word document I was editing. The "automatically update style" feature (which is a real BEAR to turn off, BTW) kept changing everything each time I changed ANYthing, and I had to use the "undo" tool to put it back. Finally, I get an error message that there were "too many edits" to the document. I had to save it in a totally reformatted style, and now I'll have to start over from not quite square one, dang it! Too many edits my eye! That's just sloppy workmanship on the part of MiniSquishy's minions... (The pic above is titled "Satan Ruling Over Hell" - an apt similie methinks!)

Same here, I am using Firefox on both my WindowsXP and Linux based systems. Have used it for 2+years with minimal problems.

Thank you for that link, I used to use mozilla's firefox but when I bought a new computer I was foolishly persuaded by IE7, bad move I know.

I shall devote this weekend coming to a complete swap over to fox.

Thanks again.

WOOOOOWW !

I have just swapped over from I.E. to Fox and I really had forgotten how slow IE is. Man it has improved on the spot. Shame I lost my link to the bath breaking thread, that was real slow to load in the end.

It only took a few minutes and it even took all my settings and favourites over, magic.
