Begging To Be In A Daft Punk Video

Posted January 09, 2008 8:38 AM

From electro^plankton:

The Kamioka Observatory in Japan is perhaps one of the most stunning pieces of architecture designed for scientific research. Located 1,000 meters underground, a cylindrical tube houses 50,000 tons of ultra-purified water. The walls are completely sheathed in photomultiplier tubes able to detect neutrinos, proton decay and cosmic rays. Not open to the public but I can only imagine. Seen it at New Launches.

Earlier experiments were done with highly toxic chemicals, chlorinated solvents, several decades ago.

Kind Regards....

We looked at manufacturing the PMTs for this project a couple of years ago but just could not cope with the quantity of detectors required.

How does one ultra purify water? Not trying to be snarky here I am just wondering what sort of process is used?

membrane filtration, filter beds, IR exposure, ion exchange, deionization, reverse osmosis......?

That's what comes quickly to mind.
