20 Things You Didn't Know About Snow

Posted January 09, 2008 1:26 PM

From Discover | 20 Things You Didn't Know About...:

Think you know something about snow? Well, don't eat the red snow, either. "Watermelon snow," ruddy-tinted drifts that smell like fresh watermelon, gets its color from a species of pigmented algae that grows in ice. The snow tastes great, but eating it might ruin your day.

Thank you for the info.

There were only 2 of the 20 which were news to me.

I had while very young, heard an apocryphal story about "Yellow snow", yet not actually seen any.

It's always a pleasure to learn.

Kind Regards....

Hi C_Rummel3.

The statement is true, ice is a mineral!!!! Liquid H2O can also be classed as a mineral. If you read Dana's textbook of mineralogy 4th volume you will find this to be true.

The definition of a mineral is, 2 or more chemically bonded natural elements that are bonded in such a way as to produce a natural crystalline substance that has internal symmetry. If a crystal has free space to grow it will show this crystal symmetry by it's external shape.

Spencer.

Dana is a dipshit. Ice is frozen water.

I hate it when I'm wrong.

'Shouting, yodeling, and most other loud sounds cannot trigger an avalanche.'

I'm sure they use cannons firring blanks to minimise avalanche risk in some area's.

They dont use cannon's firing blanks, they use real artilary to cause controlled avalanches. I have seen it done.

And I agree, Bullsh1t that its a mineral!
