UK Jails Considering RFID Implants For Prisoners

Posted January 14, 2008 8:55 AM

From Engadget:

Ah -- dead, eerily-prescient, 20th century authors... they just can't stop proving you right, can they? In a decidedly Orwellian turn, British authorities are considering a proposal to implant "machine-readable" RFID tags under the skin of some prison inmates as part of a plan to free up space in the country's overcrowded prisons. Just like the nightmare world described in your favorite cautionary tales, the chips would enable authorities to track the location of implantees using satellite and radio-wave technology.

With over 10,000,000 Security cameras all accessible to "The Authorities", along with voice and facial recognition, the Britain which was once Great, shows the shadow of what is to come.

DNA and blood samples from babies, Central Registry for all data, RFID tags on all purchasable objects, it's only a matter of time.

Spying on all and sundry, recording all Internet surfing, phone calls, faxes, emails, postal addresses, there is equipment which can read letters without opening the envelope, you name it.

The UK is a spymaster's paradise.

George Orwell (Animal Farm, 1984, etc), along with Ian Fleming (James Bond), knew much more than was ever published.

Kind Regards....

It is not a matter of time. It is here and been here for quite a while. The adage of "The best way to boil a frog is not to throw it into boiling water, the frog will jump out. Rather place the frog in cool water and heat it up slowly, the frog won't realize it until it is to late."

Although the point for improved security is well intentioned, I agree with the prior commenters.

And how do you know its well intentioned. Think about it. You just presume that. Do really think the companies like veri chip and the elite who are tyring to impliment this care about the public.

An RFID that could be tracked by satelllite? Pull the other one mate...

Maybe I can get a handful of these for my property. Say, my wallet, or my keys! Books I loan to "friends", or maybe I could put one in my car to track my kid when he "borrows" my car. Hotels can track stolen towels right across the country! They would pay for themselves if I could put one in my pen, then I can find whoever it is that steals pens off my desk every day.

An RFID as it exists right now is nothing different from the id bracelet that every prisoner, and for that matter, every hospital patient is now compelled to wear except for that it is hygenic, and much more difficult to remove. Its not an "onstar system" slipped under your skin! I would jump at using one of those instead of the awkward and clunky bracelet I wear because of my allergies.

I may eat these words in a few years.....grin!
