Scientists in hybrid embryos plea

Posted January 15, 2008 9:44 AM

From BBC News | Science/Nature | UK Edition:

Leading scientists have urged peers not to block the use of human-animal hybrid embryos for research. Amendments to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill would restrict the use of such embryos, which contain a small amount of animal DNA. But the scientists say they are vital to the development of new treatments.

Yes, but you can be sure as night follows day that some one will one day attempt to let it grow to maturity, what then?

The resulting human-animal hybrid cannot be just killed off! I am all for scientific advancement, and medicines to cure the sick, but I do not believe we should be going down this road.

This sounds scary! I don't consider myself to be easily frightened by new scientific endeavors and I'm not one of those people who can't see the possible benefits from performing certain "controversial" experiments (such as stem cell research and so forth). I do believe, however, that we need to draw the line somewhere. I mean, seriously are we going to start trying to produce people with the head of a jackyl (like in ancient Egyptian pictographs)? I may be exaggerating some, but then again...

Who knows where the future will lead us? I don't think that "because we can" is a good enough reason to try to do certain things. There has to be some sense of what is "moral" or "proper" in science, we shouldn't cut science off at the knees, but at the same time we can't give scientists free reign to do anything they want.

Concur. There are some things that may be possible, but just don't need doing. But never underestimate the power of human stupidity - it is a force to be reckoned with.

'Island of Dr. Moreau" perhaps? I don't think this is a good idea, no matter how good the intentions, because someone will inevitably misuse the techniques.
