Scientists Unveil 'Supercarrot'

Posted January 15, 2008 9:45 AM

From BBC News | Science/Nature | UK Edition:

Scientists in the US say they have created a genetically- engineered carrot that provides extra calcium. They hope that adding the vegetable to a normal diet could help ward off conditions such as brittle bone disease and osteoporosis.

Hi Guest.

The answer is, you die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here in the UK there are a lot of people who suffer after taking an unintentional overdose of vitamins, particulary D,C and Bcomplex.

well with too much calcium you usually get kidney stones--which are kinda fun if you hadn't heard, definitely worth the amount of money the R&D of these carrots likely cost...

Hi Guest.

I have had kidney stones, they are not much fun I can assure you!

Usually to much intake of C vitamen will pass out of your body when you urinate, but your kidney's can only tolerate so much, after which you will suffer kidney damage!

Your body also needs minerals like copper, zinc, calsium and selenium, but too much of these will also cripple you. Vitamen and mineral intake has to be balanced, too little and you have a big problem health wise, too much and your health will also suffer. Ask any doctor and he will tell you that this is true!

To combat these problems and keep a healthy body and mind you need to eat a balanced diet, saturated fat is also very unhealthy, as you can see all around you.

So, forget fortified foods, eat a balanced diet, you have been warned!!!

My dear friend Spencer, I am really amazed that you had made no mention of that most ancient and natural compound reffered to by several names e.g. inuit olive oil, osouq or as it is regularly called from the shaman's medicine bag, seal oil.

the only thing healthier than that naturally biofiltered food source is human breast milk.

for the rest of you if you wish get your hands on

Hi Guest.

Yes, any form of polyunsaturated fat like olive, or fish oil is very beneficial to humans, and today too many people are consuming too much saturated fats!

Here in the UK over the past five years there has been a lot of publicity about these dangerous saturated fats, and these days most of our population have actually taken this advice seriously.

Any natural plant oil is better for you than most land animal fats, but they are cheaper, thus we have now an underclass of obese people. Now animal fat like pork or beef fat is not so bad in small amounts, but, and this is a very big but, To many people seem to be unable to forgo these fats in large amounts!

Now, as we live in a Big Brother society here in the UK, people have had enough of being dictated to! The downside is that the population is getting fatter and fatter, and this has led to extremely bad health among the lower classes. It is no use telling these people how to eat healthily when their income is below the bread line!!!

Luckily there is a solution, ban all saturated fats from the populations diet???

Spencer.

"as we live in a Big Brother society here in the UK" followed by "Luckily there is a solution, ban all saturated fats from the populations diet..." leads one (this one anyway) to believe that it's less a dietary problem than a political problem...

The telling point, though, appears to be what may be an advertant pun ('Pun my word, sir, did you really MISS this one?!?) where you wrote: "...and this is a very big but..." which seems to BE the problem, all right, big butts. It strikes me as odd how not that many years ago, the poorer classes had lean, even gaunt appearances and the wealthier classes suffered overweight and gout. Now, the poor are morbidly obese from too much macaroni and imitation cheese, while the rich do pilates with Richard Simmons and Jane Fonda. The saying goes, "you can't be too rich or too thin". Maybe it's a form of natural selection at work...

Hi EnviroMan.

This is my answer to you!

I was born in march 1945 when we still had rationing here in the UK, in fact we had rationing all the way till 1952. Because of this I am very slim without one ounce of fat on my body and I go mountain climing at the age of 62.

Todays children could do well to go through what we went through during and after the second world war!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Spencer,

There appears to be some dissent about the role of Polyunsaturates. As the adage says, 'All things in moderation'. The food industry does seem to make a lot of it's money from processing fat in one form or another.

Many people seem misled over the various types of fat, and the types of Cholesterol. (My memory aid is Lousy Density Lipoproteins, and Healthy Density Lipoproteins). When my Doc put me on Statins quite some time back, I was surprised to be also given Folic acid supplement. I'd thought this was something that only pregnant women took. Apparently it helps de-fur the arteries. Nowadays people are routinely given Statins without even checking Cholesterol. Sounds insane to me, but the worried well are a big market. The availability of MRI scans to those who just want to check themselves is on the increase. I find this whole self-diagnosis thing alarming.

Vitamin supplements are no replacement for a good diet if a person is healthy. That link didn't mention some of the milder effect such as constipation (B Vits), or diarrhoea (Vit C)

"...constipation (B Vits), or diarrhoea (Vit C)..."

So if you overdo both of them, they should counteract each other, and you end up regular, right? What I tell people is that unless they have M.D. after their name, they are not qualified to make a medical diagnosis, even on themselves. It amazes me how many people think they can determine whether they are sick or injured or not. (Remember, I do workplace health and safety as well as environmental compliance.)

Totally agree old-chap. Trouble is that many people don't, and the big Pharma's play on this. Don't even get me started on Homeopathic. The internet has probably been pivotal in convincing the stupid that they can self-diagnose. There are more people selling snake-oil now than at any time in history.

That reminds me, I'm still soliciting R&D funding for my perpetual motion machine that runs on snake oil and emits pure oxygen from the exhaust. Gets at least a thousand miles per gallon, and has zero moving parts. I'm not certain, but it may be an anti-gravity device as well... Let me know, I'll provide the number of the Swiss bank account which the funds can be transferred to for your protection (I guarantee not to actually handle any of the money!).

Might be a boon to the lactose-intolerant!

But doesn't the body require vitamin D and phosphorus in order to process the calcium? Better eat those carrots outdoors in the sunshine, and have a banana afterward.

I believe it's potassium vs phosphorus, but yes, a nice shredded carrot and sliced banana fruit salad, with maybe some raisins for iron, walnuts for B-complex, out on the verandah, why gosh, with a healthy lifestyle like that, who needs a daily dose of vitamins?

Hi EnviroMan.

Yes we need Potassium, but the amount of Potassium in our blood should balance with the Sodium in our blood! For years I have always had a deep longing for Salt (Na Cl), two years ago I collapsed and was rushed to hospital where I lay in a coma for five days. It turned out that my blood Potossium count was three times as high as it should be, while my blood sodium count was way too low, bordering on the level when I could die at any moment!

It took the doctors four weeks to get somewhere near a balance, meanwhile I had been on a drip containing a saline solution twice that of sea water. When asked, I told the doctors that I had not eaten a banana for two years, but from the age of 19 to 36 I ate a banana a day every lunch time. This it seems was the reason for my longing for salt, and now my body could not properly proccess Potassium!

I have always eaten a well balanced diet otherwise, so the moral of this is never eat too much of one thing. By the way, I now have to take two Sodium Cloride a day to keep me alive for the rest of my life!!!

Spencer.

Sounds like a really bad experience. Do you recall the case of the parents who were accused of murdering their child by giving him massive salt overdose ? Turned out he had a rare metabolic disorder which led to fatal salt levels accumulating. Bad enough to loose your child, but to then be accused of murder must be a nightmare. ( Sorry for butting in guys, but it seemed pertinent)

ROFLMAO!!! Same here mostly! We have access to excellent organic produce here, though. Still, I do love to "yarden" (a portmanteau word meaning gardening and yard work, incl. flower beds & lawn mowing), and I have a preference for heirloom varieties of whatever I grow - shoepeg corn is a fave. Monsanto ain't touched that one, it's not even a hybrid. I also like Anasazi beans - unchanged since they were grown at Mesa Verde - over pinto beans. Less gas for one thing...

My Mrs. has the opposite problem - low potassium. She faithfully eats her 'nanners, but still needs frequent supplementary potassium pills. They're great honking horse pills that contain about 7 banannas worth of the stuff each.

Stay healthy, my friend!
