Where Were You Born?

Posted November 11, 2006 8:00 PM by Steve Melito
Pathfinder Tags: immigration international law

For most of us, the place of our birth is relatively obvious. But in this fast-moving world, every now and again that simple question of determining someone's birthplace presents something of a quandary. This item from How Stuff Works explains the recent case of an Egyptian woman traveling on a US passport from London to New York. After her baby was born in mid-air, the plane landed in Canada.

The Equator went through the hospital ward where I was born. Mums could choose to deliver their babies from the nothern hemisphere into the southern, or vica-versa just for fun, or 'luck'.

I beleive the only spot in the lower 48 where you can look directly south into canada is Niagara falls, New York!

When making their decisions, did the mothers-to-be receive counselling on possible effects, on parturition or baby, of Coriolus force?

Now that's what I call funny . With careful alignment the baby could arrive into both hemispheres.

I think I have been in a 'spin' ever since, Like Europium's post #17, I need to keep taking those meds. just to stay partially sane.....I have always loved thunder storms. My Uncle told me that he was not at all surprised, as he had to drive my Mum to Hospital, and told me you could read a newspaper as well as if it was day. The worst 'Tropical Storm' he can remember. constant lightening flashes, and continuous thunder. Another side effect, is that almost as long as I can remember, I have been obsessed with a "Sky Rail" held in orbit round the equator by "Active Internal Mass" My Grandfather had a Golfing friend who was a member of the British Interplanetary Society. http://www.bis-spaceflight.com/

Also:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Interplanetary_Society

I have to type this post with my "nose" as the straight jacket I wear is a bit restrictive.......but.....By the time of the 2012 London Olympics, Global Steel Production could reach about two billion metric tonnes per annum, If half that amount was electromagnetically shot into space.....gosh.....the equator is 40 million meters long, so that would mean 50 tonnes per meter. Plenty strong enough to hoist up Iron Ore for processing in space. A mad idea now Kris, but a possible solution to that WW4 problem? Migrate off the surface of the Planet. In a century or two we could have more 'productive' real estate above our heads, than below our feet! Honest.

Now this is just a thought in its preliminary stages - ship all pregnant mums (with twins ) to the equator ( we'll need help from Ecuador ,Columbia , Brazil , Gabon , Congo, Zaire ,Uganda ,Kenya , Somalia , and Indonesia ). Of each pair , one gets spun in a different direction by Coriolis force. A large chain looped around the earth captures the energy of said infants delivery . I will write and ask the Blue Peter TV programme if I could get enough sticky back plastic for this proposal.

My atlas is probably out of date (actually I learnt the countries to silence a geography teacher at school -the mnemonic is un-repeatable) , and there are some minor technical difficulties. For my budget I will ask the people who figured the cost of the Olympics (so as to get backing).

Heath Robinson eat you heart out !

My Coffee is nearly gone , so I d better get back to pretending to be busy .

Will report back when able. Kris

A Coffee fiend? by any chance, mathematics would grind to a halt without it. Are those "Red Horns"? in your avatar? If the London Dome is any guide, the Olympic Price Tag has a long way to climb. If it means they can't afford another 'War', I will raise my own mug of coffee to both the London Olympics and your magnificent scheme Kris. Cheers. P.S. I know just the Accountant you are looking for.

I merely like to play advocate for the pictured chap on occasion .

A mathematical tantalizer is in the pipeline.

London dome ? - The Olympics is a diversion for that (and other events). It was planned long before (Like roses , BS management = lay it on thick and they'll smell sweet ! )

Accountant ? Our dour Scottish man is busy , but I will have a word .I'm not sure with which of the Scots in Westminster yet , but I'll take a random choice and probably succeed !

Ahh , the sweet sound of my old fashioned whistling kettle ....

With the Big Boss's permission, I was permitted to jump ship and join up with our Roman Catholic Brethren, Devil's Advocate is an old and respected vocation, his job is to 'object' to every proposal forwarded in council or conclave. Especially 'Beatification'. "Too many Saint's spoil the broth" is his watchword. I am in trepidation of your "tantalizer" Kris, I used to be Mr. Lightening Fast, now sadly the old grey matter is tortoise slow. "Use it or lose it" applies here, It's a win-win situation, failure should inspire one to try and try again. Standing back to analyse the reason for failure, can often lead to highly constructive insights. The afterglow feeling may not be as intense as sex, but can last for days. A Priest is supposed to retire for at least a fortnight if a single lustful thought crosses his mind. The 'Carnal Thought' is a deadlier sin than the 'Carnal Act'. ....."Let him who has no sin cast the first stone..."

There is a fantastic pay-off, stunningly pretty girls and ladies feel totally free to relax and cast a glance so sweet it would have the average red blooded bloke in a cold sweat. Smiles are infectious, one can walk into town on a cold wet miserable day, nobody is talking to one another, shoulders are hunched up against the elements, the News is as ever, terrible, a gloom and despondency reigns. One shared smile like dominoes creates an avalanche of happiness, twenty minutes later the scene is bustling with chatter and good will. Anybody can do it, there is no magic spell greater than pure love for one's fellow human beings.

If not a US base in Greenland - which would really be in Denmark - then I would assume a NORAD base, possibly Alert.

Ahh, stupid me! Washington (the state), Michigan or Minnesota, Youngstown or Niagara Falls NY???

The short answer is Detroit. Very good!

To the other posters, AFAIK no part of Minnesota is due north of Canada. Those parts of Michigan to the east of Detroit are also north of Canada, as is the Niagara/Youngstown, NY, area - but that's not where I was born.

Thanks for playing! Hope it was more fun than the pharm plant troll question.

Well, I wasn't, and I'm not sure where the "northwest angle" is, but upon reviewing a map, I discovered a few places along the convoluted border to the east of International Falls where Canada is due south of the US.

So that's a legitimate guess!

Re: Where Were You Born?

I was lucky enough to have been born in Montreal, und haff zee papers to prove it. But...

I had a buddy named Sven who's Latvian(?) parents were on a train travelling through occupied Germany on their way to a ship to Canada when he decided to appear. His birth certificate is the size of a newspaper sheet, written in fancy old-German type in a language (German, obviously) that neither he nor his parents ever learned. He arrived in Canada before he was 1/2 and speaks only English.

In the early 1970's he crossed into the US by car one day, and stupidly told them he was born in Germany. "East or West?" - who knew? They kept him at the border for 9 hours, contacting the State Department to try and figure out where the town on the Birth Certificate was, etc. They never did find out - the place may well have disappeared in post-war reshuffling.

From then on he simply said "Ontario".

What a lovely City, Sister to Colarado Springs Colarado, Hagen in Germany & Tulle in France. I admired the new restoration to the Cathedral of the Assumption. Those gilded domes look like they come from a Fairy Tale, as if made out of sugar candy?

You should be very proud of your home city. The fortess of Mother Russia.

Niederwalluf, Germany. A very small Rhein village that is but a wide spot on the highway. When the question comes up, I usually say "Tennessee." "No way," they say. To that my reply is "East Tennessee-very far east Tennessee."

Hawaii has named this year Air Force Year, 59th Birthday this Sept? but as old fossils say "I am in my 6oth year!" Next Birthday is going to be one to look out for, I bet!

As Military 'Brats' turn out 'Rob Thomas' did well, Vocals to Carlos Santana's 'Smooth' is an all time classic, in my view.

Born at a time very long ago in a place far far from here. Came to your green planet and built the Pyramids so we could send pulsed chemical powered laser messages to home planet. Unfortunately your planets lack of shielding from gamma radiation has damaged the gene pool and the remaining inhabitants are mostly interested in beer, TV and killing each other. I wish I could go home but I lost my decoder ring back in the 60's so I can't phone home.

There you go again! How many days since you last took your meds this time?!

Btw, I have your decoder ring - or one just like it. It fell out of my CrackerJack box and onto the floor while I was at the movies with my friend, Tim Leary (watching Dr. Strangelove, what else?). Thank goodness the ring responded to voice commands or we'd never found it.

By the way, why does it always glow an actinic blue-violet whenever you say the word "aardvark?" (you know, like the colors in your avatar?) Is that the name of your leader?

If I tell you then we would have to employ the perception management device and the special forces guys won't let us near it. Unfortunately the meds just make it worse. I'm lucky I can still tolerate caffeine. Yeah the avatar is what I look like when I turn off the space-time color/shape shifter that I use when I go out in public. Tim Leary, that dude really knows how to party. Remember "SMIILE" ? (Space Migration Intelligence Increase Life Extension). By the way, he says hi. Bucky Fuller and John Lilly too, what a party.

As this comment thread has an Historical Perspecive, and birth has an inevitable consequence, may I mention that,....

Poor old Tim Leary, The trouble with burning candles both ends, is that life may be sweet, it's often short. Check out Tim's Partner, James Immel, LSD Gurus, The pair of them.

http://www.skepticfiles.org/krish/storyjai.htm

Now that the material is declassified, I can relate that as a 'Sergeant of the Peace' AKA RMPTA Military Chaplain, I was somewhat desperate to prevent the inevitable. Leaving frantic messages with the Glastonbury Constabluary. where James had his LSD HQ. on North Lode St.

Quote:- "On Nov. 13 -- Immel's 39th birthday -- he was found in the London brass shop
where he had been working.
He had been stabbed through the heart and decapitated, with his severed head
placed neatly in his lap.
Tiernan was arrested nearby."
Now back to Birthdays, on mine back in 1951, Africa had it's worst ever Tropical Thunderstorm, Night became Day...... Geuss that's why I have always loved lightning! Spookey? or what? My Boss, Scotland's Lord High Constable also loves it. Slains Castle inspired Dracula by the way. That's Merlin's Old Gaff/Pad. The most spookey castle you ever saw, perched high on a cliff, overlooking a cruel sea on the East Coast of Scotland.

Rcapper, savages smashed up my 'Time Machine' long ago, but the old 'Monkey Sage' told me how to reincarnate. He informed me the inhabitants of this planet were mutant half-breed Klingons. The Champion Warrior get's to breed with a pretty daughter from the rich merchant class, ensuring that there was a good prospect of strong and intelligent offspring. Strong 'trumps' Smart on occasions sadly. You would never have got to build that pyramid, if you had not persuaded Khufu that it was to demonstrate his 'skull pyramid' was bigger than his neighbours. 'Cairns' we call them in Scotland, real skulls weather too fast, granite lasts longer. 'Man Fears Time, but Time Fears the Pyramids' old proverb.
