Robovie Droid Helps Lost Shoppers

Posted January 28, 2008 8:20 AM

From Pink Tentacle:

The Osaka-based Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute (ATR) has developed a crowd-monitoring humanoid robot that recognizes when people are lost and helps them find their way. In a series of demonstrations conducted from January 22 to 24, a souped-up version of ATR's Robovie humanoid robot monitored people as they passed through a 100 square meter (1,076 sq ft) section of the Universal Citywalk Osaka shopping center.

If shopping centres weren't designed like nightmareish homogeonous mazes of retail hell, or at least had sensible signage or maps then people could find their way around. We wouldn't need robots (which the kids will steal or vandalize in half a day...)

One of my pet hates is maps which are displayed incorrectly.... e.g not aligned with the direction which you are forced to stand in when reading them.

Some architecture and signage is abysmal...I nominate Addenbrooks Hospital Cambridge as one.

Maybe a friendly robot is an answer?...but good design in the first place would be better.

Oh dear what a grumpy cat...I shall go and play with my scratching post

Looks as if I'm not the only one who gets confused in the modern shopping mall mazes.

I get confused easily in some hospitals too, particularly the ones with several wings, all the same, symmetrically from a pair of central cores on a slope, like Christchurch Hospital here locally.

Get in the wrong lift, or through the wrong connecting door, and you can go round in circles, until you either have to ask directions, or collapse from malnutrition on the floor.

Kind Regards....
