New R/C Car Is Powered By Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Posted February 07, 2008 8:58 AM

From OhGizmo!:

Are you one of the growing number of people that is becoming more conscious about your impact upon the environment? If so, it's probably no surprise that your children's (or other people's kids') toys demand a lot of power. From game consoles to R/C cars, their energy consumption is great. Wouldn't it be nice to give them something that's environmentally-friendly, but still fun? What kid doesn't like a remote controlled car?

I am curious where to get them and how much do they cost? I sure would like to have one for myself as well as my kid if I had one. And how long does the hydro charge last?

Edmund Scientifics has experimental fuel cells and fuel cell car kits:

I just want the fuel cell...or at least some DIY plans on how to make one. It'd be cool to play around with.

There is another car out there that is H powered. It is called the H Car. Horizon Fuel technologies produces it. I have seen the video on this guy . It is not remote controlled and does not go very fast, and sells for around $120US. I would like to see a stand alone fuel cell that charges batteries, then place that in a car and use the capacity of the batteries for the power, not the conversion rate of the fuel cell. I've been playing /racing R/C cars and boats for 30 years. The best on the market is li-po batteries and a dc brushless systems! Get me a 130mph fuel cell car and I will open my wallet very quickly.

You'd need to race a blimp to carry the equivalent energy of what your lipos. What I would like to see is some super-capacitor R/C conversions!

I agree, lets look into an organic power source, could we roll up an electric eel in to a 1 farad cap and shove it in to car. Lighting powered !!!

You'd have to feed the eel but banana peels and garbage (a la Back-to-the-future) are more easily found than hydrogen refueling stations. ;)

YEP the MR. Fusion is still on my drawing board. After I found out everything comes from carbon and when consumed returns to carbon , I started looking in to hydro carbons. Why not separate it into it's two components use the hydrogen for all of it's purposes and use the carbon to to construct our consumable goods? I would really like a nice carbon fiber microwave.
