Muscle Suit for Carpenters Unveiled In Japan

Posted February 18, 2008 8:44 AM

From The Raw Feed:

Geniuses at Nagayo University in Japan unveiled a prototype ROBOTIC MUSCLE SUIT designed to help carpenters fit ceiling boards in place. This particular carpentry task is unnatural to the human body and takes a lot of brute force. It requires that the board be pressed against the ceiling with one hand while screwed in place with the other. The robot suit takes on most of the load, so the carpenter doesn't have to. Hey, sitting around at a computer all day is also an unnatural act. Where's MY robot suit?

When I was in construction 20 years ago we always used our head to hold the board in place giving us two hands to nail the boards in place.

Since no one has said it yet........."That's using your head".

Yes, bad joke, but I used to do the same thing (but with steel panels).

We always used a plank against the ceiling panel, and a 2 inch square length of timber with rounded corners, which was cut to ceiling height length.

This was placed below the plank, and kicked along the floor, until jammed into place temporarily.

On larger ceiling sheets, we used 2 or more of these.

Easy to fasten the ceiling sheets, then drop out the support stays, and catch the plank on the way down.

Cheap, efficient and easy to use, that was our method.

Kind Regards....

They are called "dead man". Easily fashioned from 2X4 lumber into a T.

The suit wearer still has to bear the weight in his legs and back. I wonder how many sheets of drywall the average worker needs to hang before the system pays for itself?

Japanese carpenters must make a killing putting up these boards.

That, or the Japanese robots must be dirt cheap.

In Miami, this just would never be marketed for a carpenter.

I wonder if the muscle suit makes Japanese Carpenters taller so they can impress the Geisha girls or goes on strike If overworked ?
