Eclipse photos

Posted February 21, 2008 8:46 AM

From MAKE Magazine:

MAKE Flickr photo pool member Osbock has some great shots of the eclipse from last night - Photos of the 2-20-2008 total lunar eclipse. By the time I had finally found my ancient 500mm reflex-nikkor, the eclipse was nearing totality. Also it was very very cold! There were a few wispy coulds which affected the images a little. These were 1 second exposures.

There were complaints about the lack of pictures from the UK. I know why! It was only clear up to, and not including, the eclipse. Somebody was waiting with a handful of clouds and threw them down my telescope.

My pictures can be found here in CR4.

There is another less known lunar event coming up for the UK at least. On the 8th just after sunset, you can possibly see a 1% luminescent new moon. This is rare for some reason and therefor worth looking out for. It means you can see the edge of the moon in higher detail than normal when watched through a telescope. You will be able to identify craters that are normally invisible from earth.

Good luck.

Thank you and you are welcome.

Do you know that we are also starting a new solar cycle right about now? It is predicted to be a nice strong one with possibly good to very good solar activity. This includes flares, sunspots and the magnetic interference connected to it here on earth. It also means that when we have an eclipse, we will have a nice corona which has been lacking the last few ones.

I have just bought myself a baader solar filter for my scope and am hoping to start my first ever solar observations soon. I will report later.

One warning for all who own bino's or telescopes, NEVER look into the sun without PROPER astronomical protective filters. If you don't know about it already I advise you to read up on it before you try anything. Your eye reflexes are not fast enough to protect you against the harmfull intensity of the sun and you will leave yourself blind forever.

Hello case491

Thank you for your kind advice, which arrived a bit late for my friend at left.

He trusts that all telescope users and sun viewers will heed your advice.

Kind Regards....
