Tires are so useful in so many areas I am amazed that there aren't more businesses that are recycling them. trails in national and state parks, tracks for schools. Draining parking areas. there is no end to the use of a simple auto tire.

I was interested to learn that used tires could be used to filter wastewater. I've been following a story about a factory in Ticonderoga, NY that planned to burn tire chips as a fuel source. The company, International Paper, discontinued the program after a trial run because "Preliminary test data indicates that long-term use of tire-derived fuel would not be economically feasible at the time." Not surprisingly, folks downwind of the plant were pleased with this decision.

The Stste of Pennsylvania started testing using
Wood Chips, from chippers (Tree Removal) as a water purification medium. I haven't heard anymore details. These tests started 6 or 7 years ago I was told. This is nothing to do with tires, But it kind of fits the bill,"If Life Gives you Lemons, Make Lemonade!"

I would think that burning would have all sorts of environmental problems. I remember a couple of different fires at authorized tire dumps that burned for weeks and the air quality in the region downwind was absolutely dismal. There was no easy way to put the fires out. They just burned. I have a gut level displeasure at the burning idea. No real evidence, just a dislike of the idea. But if you grind the tire up, mix it with a little adhesive and lay it out flat. Then you have a great, soft, durable matting. Add it to asphalt after a little effort to remove or lessen the steel belting.
