Insane Conspiracies That Actually Happened

Posted March 10, 2008 8:43 AM

From Neatorama:

Cracked.com has a very interesting post about 7 insane conspiracies that actually happened. For example, here's The Business Plot: In 1933, group of wealthy businessmen that allegedly included the heads of Chase Bank, GM, Goodyear, Standard Oil, the DuPont family and Senator Prescott Bush tried to recruit Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler to lead a military coup against President FDR and install a fascist dictatorship in the United States. And yes, we're talking about the same Prescott Bush who fathered one US President and grandfathered another one. See how the plot failed (obviously) and check out the rest of the list.

This event, known as "The Whitehouse Coup", was the subject of a BBC 4 radio program several years ago. I've not yet listened to this program, and am not familiar with the work of investigative reporter Mike Thompson. Do we have any Brits with us who can comment on Thompson's reputation? And did this report cause a stir in the U.K.?

Hilarious! The linked article shows what is supposed to be a picture of Prescott Bush, but it actually is Peter Sellers (playing Dr. Strangelove)!

For that matter, the linked website, Cracked.com, maybe just that! Look at the reference thrown in about Ron Paul in the same article. Clearly a straw man fallacy tactic that has nothing to do with the actual story.

A short drive on the internet to Wikipedia in reference to the Business Plot turns up nothing definitive on the plot. Congress, while believing it was possible, dismissed it and never investigated the allegations made by Major General Butler. Apparently, congress didn't take it very seriously and I am not sure I do, either.

Hmm, I gave up after the first "claim" because the article was so politically slanted and motivated that I dismissed the whole thing as a hack and smear job rather than real journalism.

Anyone interested in buying a bridge?

Have a look at the military top 10 on the site, I think it explains the format of the information present in these articles.

http://www.cracked.com/article_15983_10-most-bizarre-military-experiments.html

I can verify 9 of the 10 (not the pigeon targeting system however), and it's obviously written in a (mostly factual) but humorous way. As for the pics, same thing.

Now I can only verify 3 of the 7 "Insane Conspiracies That Actually Happened" I am still going to say, although not the pinnacle of journalistic representation it isn't the "The Onion" (which is all made up).

This seems to have been posted a few weeks early.

Thompson is onto you Del ! I never heard of him, and our resident radio fan, ER, appears to be on a sabbatical. The follow on link to military stuff was good - it was all true (pigeons, Habakkuk) as far as I could be bothered looking.

The Truthers have struck again with their "Business Plot". There is nothing, absolutely nothing, to back that one up except a hatred of all politicians named Bush and American capitalism. They take a prewar business relationship with Fritz Thyssen, a German steel magnate who broke with the Nazis before WWII and was finally imprisoned by them and use it to "prove" Prescott Bush was dealing with the enemy. Thyssen was declared not to be a Nazi at Nueremburg. Prescott Bush had dealings with Thyssen's Dutch holdings and they were legal until after 12/7/41 and he then severed ties with those companies.

By listing it along with factual plots that actually happened, this Truther site continues the tinfoil hat brigade's traditions and their belief that everything they don't like is a conspiracy.
