New $5 Bills to Foil Counterfeiters, Starting Today

Posted March 13, 2008 9:21 AM by Steve Melito

From FraudFighter.com

New $5 bills will be safer, smarter and more secure: safer because they're harder to fake and easier to check; smarter to stay ahead of savvy counterfeiters; and more secure to protect the integrity of U.S. currency. Because security features are difficult for counterfeiters to reproduce well, they often do not try, hoping that cash handlers and the public will not check their money. The redesigned $5 bill retains two of the most important security features that were first introduced in the 1990s and are easy to check.

I just though it was so nice of them to tell the counterfeiters what to look for and where to find it.

The counterfeiters (or anyone who looks carefully) are already well aware of these security features whether or not the details are published. Since these measures are so difficult to defeat, publishing details about them should actually decrease the incidence of attempted counterfeiting. These days successful counterfeiting requires teams of people running very expensive high-tech equipment. The mom-and-pop scale operations of the past don't pose much of a threat anymore. Now the U.S. mainly need to worry about counterfeiting by rival governments.

Yes, indeed. Namely, Iran and North Korea.
