Melting Ice Sheets Can Cause Earthquakes, Study Finds

Posted March 17, 2008 9:10 AM

From National Geographic News:

As ice sheets melt, they can release pent-up energy and trigger massive earthquakes, according to new study. Global warming may already be triggering such earthquakes and may cause more in the future as ice continues to melt worldwide, the researchers say.A series of large earthquakes shook Scandinavia around 10,000 years ago, along faults that are now quiet, the scientists point out.

What melting ice sheets? What global warming?

Have they looked at the weather the last year or seen the average temperature for Earth has plunged so much in the last 12 months as to nearly erase 100 years of "global warming"?

However, I can buy into their theory of ice mass reducing earthquakes.

Dear AH, But there must be global warming!!! If there isn't then where will the proponents find something to scare people needlessly?

This is a climatic shift. It happens every 500 years or so.

Don't get me wrong. We need something to spur the growth of a new energy source. But I wish humans would get excited for the right reasons.

A new source of energy that is cheap, (or free) non-polluting, and that anyone can use should be the goal.

Hydrocarbons have had their run, and perhaps stopped the "ice age" that was predicted in the sixties, but their time is drawing to a close, along with those who control them.

Having grown up in the "coal age" (prior to 1950) and as I previously worked in the fuels technology area for a number of years, I see the issues with HC fuels in a somewhat different light. I don't believe that HC fuels are unusable; rather some bright engineer/scientist needs to develop appropriate technology for cleanup of emissions. A technology that is cost effective and useful for all sorts of scenarios.

As to the National Geographic article, I guess I'm going to let my subscription lapse if they really believe what they print.

Dear Aqua_Doc, I agree that HC has uses, the modern plastics industry would be in trouble until they began producing the bioplastics, made from soy, lecithin and hydrogen gas, but as a fuel for civilization; I think its time humanity climbs out of the cradle.

The fuel for civilization should be totally renewable and non-polluting. There are several choices, just decide and push forward. And there is no need for another OPEC like agency to regulate peoples lives. Any one can do it.

Melting ice sheets may cause earthquakes - I could have told them that, and saved the cost of that study.

Global Warming - No.

You don't believe me ?

Ok, ok, ok and who was it that programmed this computer model? Put a lil' extra in it to add a lil' more to the ol' richter scale. Booo to National Geographic for being a rag like the national enquirer
