FIber Optics Secures Fences

Posted March 20, 2008 8:03 AM

Optical fiber is now being used to help make fences more secure. When optical fiber is moved, even slightly, the way it transmits light is changed. Analyzing changes, these fiber-based security systems can determine if the movement is caused by the wind or by an intruder. Fiber can protect systems up to a 50 mile perimeter. How would you apply this technology?

Is the position of the disturbance along the fence line attainable by reflectometer means or otherwise? The Mexican border fence would by a good place to test the technology.

I work for an electric utility and theft of copper in our electrical substations has become a serious problem in the last few years (safety/liability, causes power outages, expensive to repair/replace).

We have survaliance cameras, but need notification that something is going on (motion detection is not good enough yet, at least not for the camera system we use).

Our stations have chain link fences around them. I'm sure most electric utilities have similar problems and would be interested in this solution.

Since I'm interested in safely and low cost, I'll throw this out there for free.

With all the concern of bridge safety..

Attach some nice single mode fiber (or multi) to the bridges.. any out of the ordinary movements will be immediately realized.

Zone the system.. Use the data for inspections etc.

in extreme situations? klaxon sounds .. bridge closes.
