Can Superconducting Cables Deliver?

Posted March 19, 2008 8:11 AM

High-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables have proven to be technically feasible, but are they economically feasible? A 2002 Rand study found that HTS underground cables are an attractive retrofit option in urban areas with existing underground transmission circuits. They allow utilities to avoid the expense of new excavation to increase capacity. To date, however, outside of a few demon projects, there have been few deployments. What's holding back this technology? Is it too complex? Is it too expensive?

JBZ: Can Superconducting Cables Deliver?

developing projects takes time! and is costly

at NUON in the netherlands we are developing a project of 8km length in Amsterdam

it will be retofitted in an old cable tube capable of transporting 2000A 50kV but start with 400MW, saving to lay new cable routes trough amsterdam and building a 150kV station

but developing the right cooling system , joints , repairsets e.g ans safety tests takes time
