Call to expand UK nuclear power

Posted March 26, 2008 8:38 AM

From BBC News | Science/Nature | UK Edition:

Business secretary John Hutton is to call for a "significant expansion" in Britain's nuclear power industry. In a speech to the Unite trade union, he argues the industry should go beyond replacing its 23 ageing reactors, which provide 20% of the UK's electricity. He will call for the creation of a £20bn industry with 100,000 new jobs - making the UK "the gateway to a new nuclear renaissance across Europe".

4,000,000,000 years before that toxic waste is safe to be near.

I appreciated: <""In terms of waste disposal, I don't think there is an argument about how it should be done - there is an argument about where it should be done."">

NIMBY = Not In My Back Yard, of course.

Across the Irish Sea, fish are heavily contaminated with leaked radiation from Sellafield.

Kind Regards....

I believe it is time to expand nuclear energy, as well as the reprocessing of spent fuel. Nuclear energy emits no greenhouse gasses and when spent fuel is reprocessed, is relatively environmentally friendly.

The public needs security from their fear of accidents or mishandled waste. Nuclear has gotten a bad rap in the past with little more justification than paranoia and misunderstanding. Most of a nuclear power plant is comprised of the redundancy of safety systems. With today's technologies light years ahead of that in aging power plants, the new plants would be even better.

This may not necessarily be the answer to the energy of the future, but nuclear energy could be utilized for production of electricity, biofuels and hydrogen, and could reduce our dependence on fossil fuels in the interim.
