60-Second Science: Solar Energy Via Balloons

Posted March 28, 2008 8:54 AM

From Scientific American:

One of the problems with large-scale solar power plants is that they require a huge amount of space. To rise above that problem, Israeli researchers recently patented a system of solar-collecting balloons. The helium-filled globes will be covered with thin-film, flexible photovoltaic panels to capture sun's rays. Designs have been proposed before that include floating or flying solar arrays. But this is a modular system, tethered to the ground through a system of cables. Some cables will deliver helium to the balloons, others will carry the solar energy back to earth. The researchers are testing the arrays on a few sites in Israel.

Let's see: in order to receive more intense sunlight, the balloons should rise above the clouds. This means that they can (WILL!) function as barrage balloons for aircraft in the vicinity. CFIT* will be outdone by CFIBC**. BAD idea.

*Controlled Flight Into Terrain

**Controlled flight Into Balloon Cables

The whole thing reminds me of the Space Station proposal years ago, which was tethered to the ground by a long cable.

Arthur C Clarke's "Fountains of Paradise" where he moved his beloved Ceylon on to the equator so it could support a geo-stationary space station, tethered to earth by an elevator running on nano-engineered steel cables.

The design was an interesting concept, that was all.

There are many obvious problems with such tethered high-flying apparatus, and I cannot see all of them being overcome easily.

Kind Regards....

Helium supply being the first and definitely not least problem.
