Wikipedia: Publishing Plethora or Particularity

Posted April 24, 2008 10:11 AM

What criteria should be used to determine what is trivial and what isn't? After all, one person's trash is another's treasure. It seems Wikipedia is caught in a subjective area. Also, the vast majority of those availing themselves of material on the site access Wikipedia's pages via search engines. They don't wade through — or even know about — material they aren't concerned with. The fundamental question: Does open inclusion of user-generated content outweigh editorial restrictions aimed at ensuring relevance and quality?

Peer review works, but what if you get a crooked peer with a bias. The Wiki on Darwin edited by a creationist?

When you use volunteers you get people with unsold time to spare amd you take a chance on their competency and relevant qualificastions.

One must maintain an even greater level of skepticism and critical thinking when using open-source reference materials like Wiki. Yes, it can be spot-on useful, but it can also be total...
