Screening the Screens

Posted April 25, 2008 9:09 AM

The workhorse of any screening machine is the woven wire mesh. In different configurations, these screens are used to filter and separate all kinds of materials. To specify the right screen for the process, you must know four key components: mesh count, wire diameter, opening, and open area percentage. Other considerations include selecting the right material used to make the mesh, from stainless steel to polymer to nylon. Additionally, if you choose a stainless steel or oil quenched wire and want as much as 3-7 times additional life have the screen hard chrome plated with a minimum of .010" thickness. Hard chrome will not resolve damage issues but will reduce wear, provide anti stick surface and reduce corrosion on the coated surface.
