Quantum Mechanical Con Game: Winning Every Time

Posted May 05, 2008 9:07 AM

From ScienceDaily: Latest Science News:

For the first time, physicists have come up with a scheme that would allow a quantum mechanical expert to win every time in a con game with a victim who only knows about classical physics. Prior quantum cons have typically been vulnerable to simple countermeasures. A pair of physicists at Tel-Aviv University in Israel came up with the quantum cheat by imagining two people betting on the location of a particle hidden among a set of boxes. In the game, a quantum mechanical con artist named Alice turns away as her classical victim, Bob, is allowed to look inside one of two boxes sitting on a table to see if there is a particle inside. He then closes the box and Alice guesses whether or not Bob found anything in the box he chose. If she guesses correctly, she wins Bob's money, if not, she pays him. Classically, there is a 50% chance of Alice getting it right. If instead she's adept at quantum mechanics, and has a third box hidden away, she can ensure that she always knows what Bob found in his box. All she has to do is prepare the particle in a state that essentially places it in all three boxes simultaneously, through a phenomenon known as quantum superposition. In effect, there is an equal chance of the particle turning up in any one of the boxes.

Er...wouldn't Alice actually have to simulataneously look in her hidden box as Bob looks in one of his two boxes? In the article it says she could look in her box "after" he looks in his.

Then again, I find myself wondering what color the boxes are and if Alice is single and possibly interested in having hypothetical dinner with me tonight. So maybe I'm not examining the problem correctly.

The answer is simple: The "Alice" referred to, is "Alice in Wonderland", and also from "Throught the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll, which was the pen-name of Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.

Kind Regards....

Am I to gather that you educated and esteemed folks don't but the quantum super-position theses?

Are you all going to rely on Schroedinger's Cat and refute that mental invention of reality; perhaps some reality but not ours.

What puzzles me is how otherwise intelligent highly educated folks fall into such mental substitutions for a reality of which they still lack material data.

Einstein finally accepted that the math work around for unknowns led to useful facts, but I don't think he ever agreed that god plays jokes with reality.

Funny thing is I have had for some time now this feeling that the answer to these puzzles is a conceptual misunderstanding that starts with Young's two slit experiment and thus may be actually right in front of us.

This story of a conjured quantum gambling cheat kind of highlights that feeling.

The real problem with the three Box idea, is Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle.

You can never certain exactly where that particle is going to be.

Kind Regards....

I guess it's going to be AWOL with Ted and Carol...
