Good Sense or Nonsense in HDTV?

Posted May 09, 2008 8:17 AM

Gamers are driving HDTV purchases, and recent news stories suggest that 25% of American households now own an HDTV. With slim profit margins and a struggling economy, is the effort to distinguish brands causing manufacturers to add useless bells and whistles? On one hand, ability to play multiple formats and accept input from both computer and video sources is great. On the other hand, are Armani televisions and 3D-ready HDTVs progress, or just a mad scramble for customer dollars? What display innovations are you willing to spend your money on?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Display Technologies, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Display Technologies today.

A recent NPD report found that 72% of American's are gamers, so I think it's safe to say they are helping drive HDTV purchases.

Manufacturers are always looking to add a feature to their product to differentiate itself from competitors. Sometimes the features are useless but sometimes they can be beneficial. The good ones will rise to the top and be copied by other manufacturers until they are pretty much standard on future hardware.

72% seems like an awfully high number of Americans as gamers. That would make more than 216 Millon gamers in the US alone. No wonder we are falling behind in science; all we want to do is play games.

[UPDATE] The NPD Group has since clarified some of the numbers issued in the following report, most notably saying that the 72 percent figure given only applies to the 6-44 age group, and that for all Americans age 2 and older, the actual number is 59 percent. [END UPDATE]

Not only gamer want HD, movie lover want HD also. I believe sport fan want it too. From 400i to 1080p is a huge different in picture quality. Able to accept different connection should be standard. 3D-ready is a joke, I'll skip that one. With all the years I spend with computer games, I've never heard of or need a "3D-Ready" monitor for any of the 3D games. 3D video card and 3D glass, yes. TV, nop.

America is always slow on technology. Japan already got TV boardcast in HD. They're even converting, remastering old movies to HD. Not sure about Europe but I believe they're ahead of us anyway. We only got a handfull of HD channels. Good thing is the HD standard war is over and we have a common format for now.

Porn should be great on a 60" 1080p. Maybe we can see behind the censored part with higher resolution

Nothing wrong with having HD TV great for movies and such (games)

But an Armani TV? common that is just to impress your guests.

the same "cheap" TV is with a different cover for another type.
