Get the Picture — in Lean Times

Rumors of a cell phone without a display got me wondering whether users really believe that the primary use of their phone is voice transmission. Imagine a cell phone with no camera, no music player, no phonebook, PDA, or games. And no display. But for the display industry, cell phones are big business. Yet, as the economy stalls, consumers are cutting costs. But once consumers have gotten used to displays, will they go back to simple devices that lack them? Would you? Or would that depend on the information that the display brings you?

Yes I agree with you, my mobile phone is an ancient one that has no screen. The reason being that I use it to make of receive phone calls only!

I have a 9-year-old Nokia, without any bells and whistles. I like it because it's reliable and I only want to use it as telephone.

As far as I am concerned, the simpler the phone the better. The address book is about the only feature I really use on my phone. If somebody wants more they can pay for it. I prefer less function per button.

While I have slowly gotten into the speed and convenience of text messaging, you can do that on an old school phone. I miss my Nokia from 2000, but I will say if I could get something as slim as my Motorola Razor, I'd be just as happy. It is easier to fit in my pocket, which is the only reason I prefer it over the MUCH thicker Nokia.

I really don't bother with the camera because the pictures are of poor quality, and the video feature I have used twice in two years, and just as a joke with some friends.

Games are cool when you are in the airport or what have you, but I'd go back to the Apple IIC style green screen, if it cut operating costs, in a second. Its not so much purchase price because I already have a phone I have paid for.
