Posted May 28, 2008 10:14 AM

From National Geographic News:

n American flag sits next to a mini-DVD on the main deck of NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander in a color image released Tuesday, two days after the probe successfully landed near the Martian north pole. The nonprofit Planetary Society compiled the DVD, which contains a digital library of science fiction stories, essays, and artworks featuring the red planet. The disc, which is expected to last for the next 500 years, also holds the names of a quarter million Mars enthusiasts from around the world.

I wonder whom they think is going to have equipment in 500 years time, capable of reading a DVD, and displaying the information on a monitor.

There is always the problem of Hardware redundancy.

The longest type of records on Earth, are markings on cave walls or baked clay tablets.

Kind Regards....

Sparks,

And just how many baked clay tablets would be required to store an equivalent amount of data? And how big would the lander have to be to carry all those baked cla. . . oh this is silly!

Talk about relegating oneself to the stone-age.

Think about it - what if whoever finds the disk only has Blue-Ray?

Forget blu-ray what about those martian sand storms? I can't seem to keep my discs at home unscathed and playable for any length of time. Of course a certain 3year old might have something to do with that... What if the beings that find it are pint sized and pick it up and use it as a frisbee?!?

Cheers

1) BluRay was backward engineered from that crashed spaceship at Roswell NM so it shouldn't be a problem--but more likely;

2)Alien(s) will pick up that disc and start looking for the dip, because, it having come from the Earth, they will assume it to be some sort of snack food, and the Phoenix lander to be some sort of home entertainment system.

So you think you can dance?
