Amazing Origami V-12 Four-Stroke Engine Runs on Pure Ingenuity

Posted June 11, 2008 8:52 AM

From mental_floss Blog:

There are some DIY projects that are cool, some that are useful, and then there are others -- like the full-running Origami V-12 four-stroke engine -- that are simply awesome. Built by a self-employed Montreal man named Yee, the Origami V-12 is a paper engine that pumps just like real engines (with the help of electrical wires, a resistor, a motor and a battery holder). It looks complicated because it is: One V-12 engine consists of 195 sheets of fine-printed patterns. From those sets, 1,978 pieces are used in total. And it only weighs 3.2 lbs when finished.

In the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, my grandfather was a machinist. There apprenticeship was wicked hard - like, filing a piece of metal flat to within 0.001" by eye!

Anyway, during a labor dispute, he had nothing to do, so he decided to carve a single-cylinder, 4-stroke engine out of hard oak by hand. We're talking valve springs, piston rings, everything but the ignition system. Once filled with oil and fuel, he started it and it ran fine until it burst into flames!!!

Lots of hype here. Not really Origami, but quite an achievement in Paper Engineering.

I have pdf format plans for a working model of a vertical single cylinder steam engine made from index/bristol card stock. A bit simpler but comparable in many respects.
