Honda Rolls Out Hydrogen Car

Posted June 16, 2008 9:20 AM

From CNN.com - Technology:

TAKANEZAWA, Japan (AP) -- Honda's new zero-emission, hydrogen fuel cell car rolled off a Japanese production line Monday and is headed to southern California, where Hollywood is already abuzz over the latest splash in green motoring. The FCX Clarity, which runs on hydrogen and electricity, emits only water and none of the gases believed to induce global warming. It is also two times more energy efficient than a gas-electric hybrid and three times that of a standard gasoline-powered car, the company says. Honda expects to lease out a "few dozen" units this year and about 200 units within a year. In California, a three-year lease will run $600 a month, which includes maintenance and collision coverage. Among the first customers are actress Jamie Lee Curtis and filmmaker husband Christopher Guest, actress Laura Harris, film producer Ron Yerxa, as well as businessmen Jon Spallino and Jim Salomon. "It's so smooth," said Harris, who played villainness Marie Warner on the hit TV show "24." "It's like a future machine, but it's not."

Should I understand that the bulk of global warming was coming from Hollywood?

I just have to say, you think American engineering could be first in technology, but I think they are still dumbfounded by the Wankel engine! What are we waiting for? Sorry, I have to vent.

Two huge obstacles are the price of the car and lack of refueling places. I also wonder about the range of the car before needing refueling. The article didn't say and I'm guessing it is less than 100 miles, which limits it to less than 50 miles from an H refueling station. That is OK if all you ever drive is less than that distance, but if you ever need to drive farther then you buy a second IC engine car or rent one. Third major obstacle is building all the new electric generating plants to make all that H. That doesn't even mention the storage, distribution and refueling problems.

H will be a great fuel, someday, when all the problems are solved. but it may take decades to solve them. Until then we need to drill for more of our own oil, make synthetic gasoline from coal, continue to develop biofuels and use available technology to save fuel without being too expensive. A steam-electric extended-range EV as proposed by - beesidemeusa@yahoo.co.uk - could be in production within 3 years and would help to reduce fuel use greatly.

The cost of conversion to a Hydrogen economy is almost beyond belief, and I'm certain no Country can afford to do so.

Using Hydrogen for "around town" trips is one thing, but to do a trip of 500kM or more is impossible anywhere at present, because of lack of filling facilities and storage.

Kind Regards....
