What's Obscene? Google Could Have an Answer

Posted June 24, 2008 9:17 AM

From NYT > Technology:

Judges and jurors who must decide whether sexually explicit material is obscene are asked to use a local yardstick: does the material violate community standards? That is often a tricky question because there is no simple, concrete way to gauge a community's tastes and values. The Internet may be changing that. In a novel approach, the defense in an obscenity trial in Florida plans to use publicly accessible Google search data to try to persuade jurors that their neighbors have broader interests than they might have thought.

That'll be interesting.

We already know that many conservative, highly religious politicians and churchmen, who espouse strict standards in public have a more relaxed view in private.

Yes, community standards may change with time but this doesn't means it change to better. If majority of them became cannibal, someone in this forum think this would be acceptable?

Lawyers use every small crevice to "bend" the law, we see it everyday in the news.

Better is just the idealised standards you grew up with.

All societies change what is acceptable and normal. If you read a bit of history you'll see our attitudes to the opposite sex, people of different color, our employers, our country, contraception, dress codes, sexuality, divorce, money & everything else have change greatly (even in our life time).

Imagine what a middle ages peasant or a citizen of Rome would think about our attitudes to say royalty, inoculations, military service.

Yes, if cannibalism was normal in a society people would think it's OK. It's not that long ago that it was routinely practiced in New Guinea and some religions still practice a symbolic form of "eating the body".

I agree that what is considered acceptable or normal change along the times. I've read some dozens of history books, is one of my hobbies. But I think there must be some limits. You talk about "some religions still practice a symbolic form of "eating the body".You're right, and many people just now are practicing a "shoot them all" game, but surely you will not see correct they change the "symbolic" for a more real way!

What I'm trying to say is that to live in society we need some agreements but that any agreement is not necessarily good. (Hitler became Chancellor in a democratic election. Do you think the people who vote him were right?)

Unfortunately, it is correct to say that societies change continuously in this regard. Just as in ages past, too many people find themselves steering away from what they know is righteous as they 'grow up' (*not*). They push God and Godliness aside in order to accept the quick thrills of sinful desires, and then, to allay their guilt they say: "This is acceptable, this is good!"
Such people lose the ability that OTHERS maintain, to recognize obscenity for what it is.
SOME of these persons are given a window of opportunity to see the truth again, when they are between 35-and-45 years of age, living in a $300k home in upper-end 'Utopiaville' --- and their 16-yr old daughter comes home late one night, reeking of booze and smoke of various types, and she curses (her parents) for uttering a word of discipline her direction. Some weeks later, after a doctor visit confirms that not only is she pregnant, but has a disease or two --- THEN, these "enlightened/progressive-thinking" adults look around, and see the proclivity of our media to plant the seeds for, and even to encourage this sort of behavior.
Society has been cursed with plenty of "Dark Knights" --- persons of high esteen or stature, who will boldly jump to their feet and pronounce "Hey, I was subjected to all these so-called bad influences and it didn't harm ME one single bit!" (this announcement is supposed to negate EVERY argument against allowing such harmful influences from continuing, of course).
The truth is, these people have been hurt more than they will ever realize during the remainder of their days on this earth.

I'm sorry to say that in my area, there are way too many 'cool' parents. (Of course, that's an oxymoron.) At my daughter's high school prom held at a local Hilton, I witnessed one of the chaperones drive up to the drop off area with suitcases for her off-spring and date. They were given a room key and off they went for the night. Now, teenagers having sex is nothing new. Their parents renting a hotel room for two unmarried teenagers on prom night is quite another. Also there is a number of parents who buy booze for their kids' parties. They make some piss-ass stupid excuse that they would rather have their kids drinking where they can keep an eye on them. These 'parents' have totally abdicated their responsibilities as parents. Given these spineless parents who are incapable or unwilling to enforce discipline, we have an up and coming generation of kids with little respect for the law because their parents blatantly flaunt the law. These same parents just chuckle that kids will be kids. Kids will be kids, but where the hell are the parents? Kids will be kids and I was one too. We all pushed limits at those times, but there was no question in my mind where my parents stood. In the absence of parental values and vision, today's kids are fodder for the Girls Gone Wild MTV mentality. In the complete absence of values and morals, what qualifies for obscenity is an ever rising bar. Witness prime time shows on network TV. I cannot let my kids 12-17 watch network TV in the evenings unless I am present and able to comment on the strong sexual content of these shows. These shows could be just as funny and entertaining without the 'in your face' sexual content. I'm sick of having to tell my kids that this behavior viewed on the TV is not normal, it's not right, and it's not how I want them to behave. CBS's "Two and a Half Men", "How I Met Your Mother", and others just disgust me with the heavy sexual overtones and characters with no morals or sense of decency.

OK, rant over.

I had a very eye opening experience once. A friend Electrical Engineer was able to look at all the search words that were being used in real time thru the local internet providers router (I think thats the right word). A surprising number of the words dealt with sexual body parts while still some of the words dealt with violent mutilation and the like.

I suspect there is a surprising number of harmful sickos out there. Do we have to even ask if harming others (or simulating it) is obscene? The worlds morals are on a downward spiral.

Just from my observations over 60+ years, the slippery slope has steepened greatly.

We were at the top of the slide, back in the 1950's, and some people put a banana skin under us, and gave a mighty push.

Morals have become cheapened, as the "quick fix" takes over from "control yourself, and say No.".

Kind Regards....
