Human genome changes with age

Posted June 25, 2008 8:46 AM

From Yahoo! News: Science News:

Individual human genomes change throughout a person's life influenced by environmental or nutritional factors which may explain why illnesses such as cancer come with age, a study said Tuesday. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University found that the so-called epigenetic marks on the sequence of a person's DNA modify over the course of their life and the extent of such changes is similar among family members.

"may explain why illnesses such as cancer come with age"

I was not aware this needed explanation; but I guess it is nice to know that someone has seen to be true what we already take as fact.

For generations we have already known that cancer is caused by: radiation, heat, and chemicals. We have known that these causes modify the cells genetics. The majority of incidents results in the cell's death. A small percentage it will grow out of control.

We have known that the carcinogen's have both a quantitative and accumulative effect. For accumulation to happen, it takes time (age).

All the safety standards in NIOSH are based on this well known facts.

Unfortunately the general public is slow to learn. Fortunately the Internet and discussion pages such as this has made this information more accessible.

Ageing is caused by the telomeres, at the end of the genetic codes, being removed by abrasion, disease, chemicals and other causes.

Cancers are generally not healed by Chemotherapy, because that course of treatment puts further strain on an already weakened system.

There are 3 main causes of Cancer: Hereditary, Dietary, environmental.

We cannot choose our ancestors, but can do something about the other two.

I'm off to a funeral tomorrow, of a cousin who died from the cancer which spread very rapidly, after two courses of Chemotherapy were given after a successful cancer operation.

He had been given a "clean bill of health", but the Chemotherapy was given, "as an insurance policy requirement".

Kind Regards....
