Metallic Glass Could Revolutionize Aircraft Structure

Posted June 25, 2008 10:41 AM by Steve Melito

From FOXNews.com

Scientists have made a breakthrough discovery in the bizarre properties of glass, which behaves at times like both a solid and a liquid. The finding could lead to aircraft that look like Wonder Woman's plane. Such planes could have wings of glass or something called metallic glass, rather than being totally invisible. The breakthrough involved solving the decades-old problem of just what glass is.

Sounds like transparent aluminum. I wonder if Scotty told them how to manufacture it?

Sounds like we are arriving at the hull material used in Larry Niven's 'General Products' hulls (book 1 of the Ringworld trilogy). These hulls were monolithic and capable of switching from opaque/solid to transparent at the whim of the astronaut at the controls. There were a few other great features too if I remember correctly - particularly an instantaneous "shock protection collision measure" to protect occupants from impacts with other objects at high speeds.

Some more information on metallic glass would be appreciated. The headline referred to it - but the article failed to inform aside from a passing reference about golf clubs. For starters, which metals are being used and how are they blended?

Does anyone out there have some knowledge that they can share on this one?
