Business Communication: Critical to a Networking Career?

Posted June 26, 2008 8:38 AM

Current conventional wisdom says that technical certifications and expertise are not enough to advance your career as an IT professional. You must be able to couple technical know-how and work-related experience with a high-level understanding of business processes and goals. You also have to be able to view IT objectives within a business context. Finally, interpersonal skills are also viewed as essential to moving up the corporate ladder. Do you believe you must have these credentials to advance as an IT professional in your company? Does your experience support these claims?

Excerpts of what you said:

technical certifications and expertise are not enough

technical know-how and work-related experience

high-level understanding of business processes and goals.

view objectives within a business context. interpersonal skills are essential

Without any one of the above you will be a c player.

Do you believe you must have these credentials to advance as an IT professional in your company? You bet your A$$ and your $ucce$$.

I would put ability to communicate above even expertise.

Without business context, you will need too much direction.

Without interpersonal skills, you're just an HR problem waiting to happen.

Without any one of the above you will be a c player.

Yes, the claims are valid and are supported by my experience and the general trend in my locality's ICT industry.

Cheers,
