Security Matters: I've Seen the Future, and It Has a Kill Switch

Posted June 26, 2008 9:14 AM

From Wired Top Stories:

It used to be that just the entertainment industries wanted to control your computers -- and televisions and iPods and everything else -- to ensure that you didn't violate any copyright rules. But now everyone else wants to get their hooks into your gear. OnStar will soon include the ability for the police to shut off your engine remotely. Buses are getting the same capability, in case terrorists want to re-enact the movie Speed. The Pentagon wants a kill switch installed on airplanes, and is worried about potential enemies installing kill switches on their own equipment.

It's a normal consequence of the crazy world (society) we have create.

One of the first steps were when the ancient Roman emperors create the Praetorian Guard just to protect the emperor, but who protect the emperor from the Praetorian Guard → Nobody. Then the Praetorian Guard killed and appointed emperors as they wanted.

It's the same old story: who supervise those who supervise those who supervise....

Hi Kwetz,

I whole heartily agree with you on this one, it is an age old question, but are there any answers?

At the moment here in the UK we are starting to be a "Big Brother" state, but who watches over big brother to ensure that the state does not go too far?

I expect your people had the same problem with "General Franco", and his regime? But of course, this is a never ending problem that the world faces every day!

Spencer.

Hi,Scapolie

I think is not a UK limited problem. I lived under Franco's regime for 25 years and I fight (no violence at all) against that regime. But it seems now we are going further in many aspects.

I just tell you one example: In Catalonia region, local government has put a sort of "spies" to punish a doctor if he talks with patients in Spanish or if children or teachers speak spanish...not in the classroom, while resting time!!!

It's not Big Brother, it's Huge Brother

I wish you (or me) lived a bit less far away (20000 km) is too much. I am really jealous because all those pretty things you can insert into the post.

If I lived next... (Imagine the following is written with hoarse keyboard).. you will teach me, otherwise I will make you a proposal you couldn't reject.

Best regards

Hello Kwetz

I have an every-growing collection of interesting graphics in my and often find a new interesting one, while searching for another on the Internet, so I save it to my computer.

For some assistance, read about fancy Post graphics here: http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/15743/How-to-insert-Graphics-into-your-Post-to-make-it-more-readable-or-interesting

I take exception to Bruce Schneier's viewpoint where he lumps both commercial DRM control and authoritative (i.e., police military, etc.) control into the same category.

Copyright protection is understandable and is more easily controllable by the consumer. If the majority of the public gets frustrated enough they will seek another venue for their cash.

Government control is a little more scary and the potential for redress is much more difficult.

In first scenario the issue is money. In the second scenario the issue is power.

As a consumer we have a much greater control on where we spend our money. As a citizen we have much more to be concerned about when it comes to our liberties.

Hi Anonymous Hero,

You should come and live here in the UK, over 500 people in the local councils, local governments and other government service providers have now been given the powers to enter our homes at any time. They will be allowed to read our mail, e-mails and tap our phones, so now we live in a "Big Brother state".

I have been watching your liberties slowly devolve over the years. I feel pretty assured that the US is simply a follower in this matter and t is simply a matter of time as more and more liberties are traded for "security", be it financial, medical, or crime.

The problem rests squarely on "the people" as we are charged with selecting our representatives and officers in the government. While many of us vote, few vote with conscience. I am deeply saddened by how many people state that they vote for a candidate based purely on campaign slogans and/or personal facial features. In this regard we are slowly eroding our ability to keep our government our government. Instead is becoming a growing entity of power and corruption with its primary goal being self preservation. Actually, it is growth and domination over "the people" it is charged with serving. Our Founding Fathers would ave easily recognized this as the seeds of tyranny.

Hi, Anonymous Hero

Copyright protection is understandable and is more easily controllable by the consumer. Perhaps in your country.

I understand copyright must exist, but here in Spain since few weeks ago any people who buys a cell phone, a recordable CD/DVD, a printer, a PC.... any device which could be used to break copyrights must pay a "canon".

Is like sending to jail a week everybody who buys a knife just because the probability he could use it to kill somebody!!

Yuck. Again, the consumer can vote NO and just not buy the product. A few months of no-sales and merchants would be putting pressure on the powers to be to "fix it".

I an odd way we had something similar here where the police were "taxing" motorists going through town. 1 mph or better would insure that you would become a "tax" payer. In some cases, speeds were fabricated. Customers complained to the businesses and those customers also stopped shopping in that town. Merchants got mad, talked to the mayor, and the mayor fired the police department. Speed limits changed from 25 mph to 35 mph and life came back to the town.

We cannot vote NO to this, was a parliament approved law. Of course we can wait 4 years to the next parliament and pray... (next one could even rise the tax)

We can stop buying the products, but this only can have an effective response if a great number of people do it and even in that case I have doubts.

I'm talking of specific Spanish situation. I've see general strikes with more than 90% of the country with no practical results and "people marches" against some government laws, here in Madrid have joined more than 2 million people (Madrid population roughly reach 5 million) and no response (and no change in the voting rates).

Spanish politicians seem to have been more interested in fighting and try to divide public opinion between right and left. So they can manipulate people who then votes with liver (no brain)

It's only a matter of time, friends, because the nature of Power is to amass more and more.

So...No more talking about the right or the left in Politics, because those are both extremes.

The best Government is one which is run by people of good morals, who put the family first, and I am not referring to the Mafia.

Kind Regards....

The price of security is freedom. Docile, well-behaved slaves will have absolute security as long as they do exactly as they are told. For myself, give me liberty and the risk of death. Security is not worth losing your freedom.

NO KILL SWITCHES!!!
