Review: 2009 Nissan GT-R

Posted June 30, 2008 8:30 AM

From Crave: The gadget blog:

It must be Christmas, because a 2009 Nissan GT-R showed up in our garage. Just like how we spent 1973 transfixed by commercials for the Vertibird Rescue Ship toy, we slathered over every specification sheet and photo of the new GT-R since the concept was shown at the 2005 Tokyo Auto Show. And in each case, we finally ended up at the controls of one. The GT-R is definitely the biggest, baddest toy on the block. The GT-R is essentially a race car made for the street. Production cars don't generally squeeze 480 horsepower out of a V-6, or have the transmission mounted at the rear axle. And the incredibly rigid suspension feels as if it was made for a race car. The car looks impressive and brutish, a theme that carries into the cabin and the driving feel. The Corvette Z06 has some scary competition in the GT-R.

"The GT-R is essentially a race car made for the street."

No way. 3,836 pounds is a fat hog on prednisone, not a race car.

Also, the spec war on time and velocities just doesn't add up when you factor the power to weight of this vehicle. That's 0.125 horsepower per pound.

Compared to the Z06 with 505 hp at 3,180 pounds, that puts the Corvette Z06 at 0.159 hp/lb. The Z06 could tow a boat and still weigh less.

The only thing that is scary is the hype.

"fat hog on prednisone"

From a Corvette enthusiast. I have hear it all. You will eat your words.

The reason it is heavier - More technology packed in. All wheel drive, Clever LSD, etc.

The reason it has better acceleration 0-60. - When the wheels go around the car goes forward instead of sitting there and removing 10mm of rubber. Power to weight ratio is not everything. It's got to be able to put the power down.

From early reviews (independent) This thing handles better than the 2008 911 turbo.

Unofficial reports say it goes around the Nürburgring 14sec faster than the Z06

You will have to wait for the LS9 engine.

J.

At my stature of 6' 5" and a wee bit, I could not shoehorn myself into that car designed for the more vertically challenged.

Nor would I want to.

Please cancel my order for one with Father Christmas, now I have seen it.

Kind Regards....
