Who's happy? You are

Posted July 10, 2008 8:27 AM

From Scientific American:

Believe it or not, the world is becoming a happier place, at least according to the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research's 2005 to 2007 World Values Survey. The cheeriest country?: Denmark. The gloomiest: Zimbabwe—no surprise given the political unrest there. The U.S. ranks 16th on the list, just after New Zealand. According to the research, published in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science, people are happiest in countries with the most tolerant social norms and most democratic political systems: Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Canada all rank among the top 10 happiest countries in the world.

We should do our own poll here, given our international membership!

Therefore, on a scale of 1 - 10, 1 being downright miserable, 10 being ecstatic, how do you rate your average happiness quotient?

I rate myself as 8. No brag, just fact. I challenge all respondents to this post to rate themselves as honestly as possible.

Okay, I'll play.

My score ambulates on the scale, even though I want to believe I'm above being tweaked by the ebb and flow of external events. Right now, I'm at 9.3.

Here are the current events and conditions having some influence on that number:

1. Started the morning in lover's arms;

2. Peaking on effects of morning mug of fresh-ground Peet's dark-roast Sumatra;

3. Found out from Ruel, HP's phone support person in the Philippines, that computer's problem is not the recently-replaced 5-month-old harddrive, it's probably the motherboard-encased fan -- replacement of which will be equal cost of new laptop;

4. Attended a funeral of younger man last week;

5. Have been invited to contribute to screenplay being written in Paris;

6. Am surrounded by an apparent infinitude of breathable air and a body that knows how to use it without my direction;

7. Don't have a TV and only glimpsed the yahoo headlines about some stock market debacle or other;

8. Cling ferociously to hope that a downturn in Fannie, Freddie, and DOW will magically neutralize all my credit card debt;

9. Am so easily amused, am LOL trying to mimic the kitty's smile;

10. Gratitude slipped in one night and apparently intends to stay, no matter what.

All the ten toppers are comparatively less involved in world politics.May be a reason for their happiness.All the police countries like US can learn from this.Am I not right?

Dear Guest, asking for someone else to affirm that my perspective on anything is "right" is just about my fastest way to the bottom of the 1-10 scale. That and comparing my life/output/intake/status/physique/car/or partner with anyone else's.

Funny then, as this blog is about comparison, I guess I was mostly ranking myself on the scale of my own life's range of experience from "ready to jump" (0) to "ready to fly"(10). If I were to believe in news reports, in comparison to others on the planet, I would have to claim 10+ on my worst day since I live in a house with running water, a town without guerilla warfare in the streets, a body still connected to all its fingers and toes (and most my teeth), a caring family, and the real possibility of enjoying the fruits of my chosen endeavors.

Today is a good day to contemplate these blessings, for I woke with a worry that I let trouble me for a bit. Here, I'll just spend the next few minutes emulating the kitty's smile again.

As worthy an endeavor as I can imagine! Thanks for your restatement of the ends of the 0 - 10 scale - much better than my original.

Now, while this may indeed be a good day to die, I think I'll wait for an even better one to come along. Call me picky...

Yes, EnviroMan. Sometimes the most compelling reason to remain on the planet here and now, to stick around one more day, is the underlying reason why CR4 is such a magnet (despite its distraction-from-production-factor): I get to contemplate the mystery-riddled world with wonder and fascination in the company of so many richly imaginative and generous souls. What more could Heaven offer than this?
