Water Found in Moon Matter

Posted July 10, 2008 8:14 AM

From mental_floss Blog:

Water found in moon matter counters the long-held belief that Earth's satellite is bone dry, researchers announced today. Geologists used new technology to coax water molecules from volcanic glasses brought back decades ago by two Apollo missions. The researchers believe the water was ejected along with magma when "fire fountains" erupted more than three billion years ago from the moon's surface.

In another stunning development, the scientests go on to say that the discovery of lunar water now virtually confirms previous formation theories that the moon is in fact made of cheese.

Water, water, every where,
And all the boards did shrink ;
Water, water, every where,
Nor any drop to drink.

Dunno - I was of the impression the moon rock samples were under close enough climate control (if not downright quarantine anymore) to avoid contamination. Still, you never know how rigorous someone else's procedures are...

Since the water was found encapsulated in volcanic glass, it's unlikely that it found its way there by accident.

But being no big fan of the "Intelligent Design" camp, I refuse to believe it was put there on purpose...

This means that a Lunar colony may be very possible. Processing the lunar rocks may yield enough water and oxygen to start a sealed recirculating system with plants to take the exhaled CO2 and make it into O and plant matter, some of which would be food. The sun would provide power and the entire habitat could be deep under the surface and lit by fiber optics and electric grow lights. Heinlein was right in his sci-fi visions.
