Army Wants 'Psychologically Inspired' Robot Vision

Posted July 16, 2008 3:56 PM

From Wired Top Stories:

Machines and robots still have a hard time figuring out what they're seeing. Which is why the Army wants 'em to start sorting through images more like human beings. The Army recently put out a call for a "psychologically inspired object recognition system... Such a system would be extremely beneficial for robotic control/intelligence and would allow for an exponential expansion of robotic capabilities and intelligence." If it all works out as planned, the Army thinks the new robo-vision 'ware could be used in "robotic security systems, autonomous factory systems and robotic health care systems," as well. "Recognizing and identifying an object from a video input turns out to be a very difficult problem. The problem stems from the fact that a single object can be viewed from an infinite number of ways," the Army sighs.

While I am sure that this is so video surveillance equipment can recognize bombs without the need of humans present (or as involved in the process), it also scares me that this type of tech can be used to recognize human faces and an easy jump would be the creation of something not so far off from the Terminator as we might joke about.

Even if it wasn't as specific as "Terminate Osama bin Laden" robots scouring the mountains, I am sure that once such software was established, recognizing objects as human would make it easy to send a robot SWAT team into a dwelling to eliminate all hostiles.

And these days it feels like that as soon as we have technology, 18 months later, a lot of other people do, too. I don't know if I want robots to have that much AI, ever.

This feels like the beginning of RoboCop. And we all know how that franchise turned out.

Ha! Classic. You know what is really accurate about that?

The government doesn't want us to even realize that---
