Welding for the Three-Ring Circus

Posted July 19, 2008 8:10 AM

Engineers often imagine, understand, or know about the technology that goes into autos, aircraft, and sometimes movie special effects. If you're an engineer, you probably get a kick out of explaining technically how impressive the technology is. So, did you know that welding makes traveling shows possible? What other entertainment venues impress you technologically? Why?

Check out the PDF link.

This is a good read for any welder or fabricator. I used to live near the Ringling Bros. circus home in Venice Fla.and just as with any other large industry there are tons of support companies and artisans in the surrounding area doing really cool stuff.

Very interesting and informative article. Thanks for posting. Years ago I was welding on a power boiler rebuild near Orlando and one of the local guys told us about some job openings for welders at one of the Disney projects. I checked into one of these jobs only to find the pay scale was really low compared to boiler tube or pipe welding. I wonder if the pay rate for these entertainment type weld/fab. jobs has increased to the point of being competitive with other welding jobs?

Fascinating - I've been backstage on movie sets and Vegas shows, but never had much insight into the circus!
