Hummer O2: Makes its Own Oxygen

Posted December 04, 2006 3:12 PM

From Gizmodo:

Hummer isn't exactly the first auto company to come to mind when one thinks of environmental friendly vehicles, but it looks like they're trying to change that. This concept vehicle that they showed off at the LA Auto Show is called the Hummer O2, and it actually makes its own oxygen. It's got algae growing in the side panels, using photosynthesis to give you stuff to breathe while you drive. It's like driving in the middle of a swamp! Isn't that cool?!

I think everyone is missing the point. Besides being known as an auto manufacturer that produces gas guzzling automobiles, Hummer is taking positive steps to experiment with designing an eco-friendly prototype for 'competition purposes'. This is not meant to be a vehicle that hits the streets today, tomorrow or ever for that matter. The competition was meant to stretch the imagination. Many would argue that it was a definite stretch, but creative nonetheless. How will companies like GM, Ford or Chrysler ever compete with foreign auto manufacturers if they don't choose to push the envelope from time to time.

Basically my message is this, STOP LIVING IN THE NOW! Weird, wacky futuristic ideas have been getting unveiled at auto shows since they began. Some of those ideas helped keep our country on top as future automotive innovators and that, I think, should be commended.

Attaboy, adaboy!

I don't understand why you'd find such sneering on a site dedicated to engineering.

The car is an experiment, OK?

So it looks like a LEGO tractor and probably sloshes as it moves. But engineers should drive hyperexcessivelysuperannuatedly over-the-top contrivances with hissing Jacob's Ladders and flux capacitors, or pedal-powered blimps.

We need more kluged-together and probably dangerous attempts at something new if we're to anything but descend into mediocrity on the less-regulated/litigated/taxed global market. We have to get spunky and fun. And I think this wacky car was a pretty good attempt.

I say that the whole point of CR4 is to put ideas (weird, radical, or everyday) out there for the testing. If a person has some constructive criticism, by all means let us hear it. If a person just wants to rant uselessly, then there are plenty of other forums for that type of free speech.

This is an engineering forum and the point is to push technology forward. Yes this is a weird vehicle and it may never actually work, but why not brainstorm in every direction? What if one of these weird ideas actually works in some other form? That, I believe, is the point of presenting an automobile such as this (well, and a little bit of publicity too). :)

Let's try to keep it as you describe, an engineering forum. Thanks to all that do.

Can anyone say Luis Pasteur? What about penicillin? Fuel injection and computerization? I think the auto industry has come a long way from the carburization era! Look to the future! Let's keep an open mind!
