Preventing Crime With Tech: The Newark Experiment

When Cory Booker became Mayor of Newark, New Jersey in 2006 he made it a priority to fight crime in the city. Gang members took his pledge so seriously that they planned to assassinate him just before taking office. Booker used the incident to launch Community Eye, a project that uses high quality security cameras and a gunshot detection system to monitor an eight square mile crime-heavy area of Newark.

It's a dreadful state of affairs, when this sort of security is needed.

When I was growing up, if there was one murder in New Zealand in a year, there was a public outcry.

Mind you, in those days the local copper travelled around on a bicycle, and really knew what was happening in his area.

Shouldn't the title of this be, "Killing Freedom and Building the Police State with Tech: The Newark Experiment."???

I don't know what is worse, that it has gotten this bad or that creating a Big Brother state is the solution.
