Robot Plane Sweeps Over UK Fields

Posted August 08, 2008 8:33 AM

From BBC News | Technology | World Edition:

The first flights have been conducted of an autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to monitor UK farmland. The robot plane flew over fields in England and Wales to map the nitrogen levels in soil, to determine whether fertiliser applications were needed. The UAV missions were part of a joint research project between tech firm Qinetiq and Aberystwyth University. Pilotless vehicles are likely to become an increasingly common sight if the airspace can be freed up. "You don't need to put pilots in a vehicle where you are only collecting data, providing you can do it safely," said Jonathan Webber, the programme leader of Qinetiq UAV Services. "That's going to drive savings in weight, which will drive savings in fuel costs. So where you see normal routine data-gathering operations by manned aviation today, I would see that gradually being transferred over to UAVs in the next 20 years."

I think this might be a superior method of checking on power transmission lines, pipeline corridors, and other utility distribution systems. Maybe even monitoring highways for traffic patterns and jam-ups.

Plus, it's bound to get Project Blue Book re-funded...

In the US, FAA would have to give permission to fly over an area. That field might turn into another oilfield before that happens.

Why not develop the surveillance package into an attachment that could be carried beneath a commercial airplane. With airlines suffering so many money related problems, They might be willing to allow an attachment to be hung under select planes for surveillance if the price is right. It would be cheaper, and easier than the unmanned planes. Currently some of the smaller planes used by Fed Ex have modified underbellies to allow additional space for packages. Thoughts anyone?

Might work, depending on altitude vs resolution, and whether or not the scheduled route was in the right location.
