Posted August 07, 2008 10:02 AM

From INHABITAT:

The United States' first net-zero community is coming soon to Arvada Colorado! Dubbed Geos, the development will employ a sterling roster of alternative energy strategies to cut its consumption fossil fuels and become completely self-sustainable. Lately we've seen a slew of similar communities springing up around the world, from Canada to India to Estonia and we couldn't be happier, since it's future-forward communities such as these that are paving the pathway to a brighter future.

I do note the waste of natural resources in the pictures of those "eco-friendly" houses.

Look at the pergalic frames, which do absolutely nothing, except use up paint, and require future maintenance.

The end walls, having no eaves whatsoever, and the typical aluminium window mechanism, will end up with water (near Denver, Colorado = Snow) entering the windows during inclement weather.

Designed by architects for looks, the concept could be carried out far better, with natural clay bricks and more.

Hi-tech does not mean a housing project is energy-efficient.

Kind Regards....

In the UK any such developments tend to get blocked by myopic local councils/planing officers or the Nimby* brigade .

*Not In My Back Yard

Planning officers tend to forget that picturesque thatched roofs were once an 'unsightly new technique' .

Yeh Sparky...those pergola details look like metal...if they really want 'em the should be from local timber...presumably they will have beautiful transparent roses growing up 'em to match up with the transparent trees in the architect's picture?
