Let the Air Out for Energy Savings

Posted August 25, 2008 8:25 AM

You've heard it before: maintain air pressure in your tires to save fuel costs. It's even become a contentious issue in the U.S. presidential campaign. Well, if millions of dollars of fuel can be saved by keeping the nation's tires pumped, how much more could be saved if we didn't have to worry about air pressure in the first place? From an energy conservation angle, what would the consequences of non-pneumatic tires be?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Pneumatics, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Pneumatics today.

They make some hard tire but the ride will kill your back.

On a side note:

Many of us around the world had worked hard to conserve oil after they messed with the USA in the 70's .

Well conservation worked so well the demand for oil went down and the big auto makers saw a way to make big profits with huge trucks and SUV's. There went all the hard work as the demand rose in 3 year wiping out 20 plus years of conservation ~!

Some people claim China and India increased deamnd but conservation had already dropped demand 15% so the 10% increase of demand was already covered.

If we conserve again there needs to be rules to stop this profiteering at our future cost.

In a society based on supply and demand market forces dictate where the next "profiteering" will occur. All the false conservation, real conservation and actual conservation is really based on the market and money supply.

As is often the case one mans concept of a thing is different than another. A dynamic that has enhanced our society over and over again.

The "Oil Shortage" of the seventies was just as manufactured as the current crisis is. The market given a free hand will develop to meet demand and if a company has the vision to meet that demand or profit from it excellent for them.

We cry freedom here in the USA and then some do their level best to moderate and mandate us into submission. Stay out of my garage. Stay out of my business efforts. If some chose to drive SUV's good if some chose to drive a Prius good as well. The "greater good" mentality regarding the free market economy is falsely created by people who want control over other people. The good of the planet becoming their latest cry.

When Fuel reached an unacceptable price - people stopped buying it. It came down. Open the tap, explore and use our hidden resources develop new refining technologies, make it worth the effort for business to develop these things by letting them make money and very soon all this socialism will start to be illuminated for what it is. Someone peeking in my or your garage.

There is no lack of resource, only the financial will to overcome. The reason, people concerning themselves with what other people are doing and government mandating business. Something that has never in the history of man succeeded in overcoming anything but freedom.

Let these fellas/ladies explore and develop responsibly. Let them build the plants to convert raw energy to usable energy. Get out of the dinosaur mindset. Oil is "Not" as finite a resource as some would love for you to believe. Information perverted by people with an agenda- AKA "Coming Ice Age" oh wait Global Warming" oh wait "Insert your panic here" but I digress.

All that aside most of the pneumatic pressure remains and always will be the hot air of those who would chose to define what you can and cant do including business and personal freedoms. Good job Detroit you used a market force to make money. Good job Exxon you made your 7 cents a gallon at a profit margin that is one of the lowest in the business world. So if you prefer not to be a lemming and have the free choice to drive or not to drive a SUV without government regulation and mandate and can afford the fuel good for you, enjoy. If you prefer a smart little Prius enjoy, It is after all pretty close to a free society here in the Good ole USA. Something that many countries around the globe do not share, those of you who do, I'm sure also appreciate the freedom.

As any good engineer will tell you its a question of force and work done. Lets not forget to praise Al Gore and his ilk for his profiting business that sells carbon offsets, at a much higher profit margine than "big oil". market forces at work its a beautiful thing.

Think of all the energy cost running the compressors filling the tire itself. I think the Tweel thing is a great idea.

You know it takes over 300,000 tons of coal each year to keep those little clocks flashing 12:00 on electronic eupiment.

Add to that the INSTANT ON feature nearly everything made sine 1990 that uses 3 to 5 volts an hour and the phone chargers for portable phones .

Multiply that by 300 million people with 3 or 4 peices of equpiment each.

Think of the engery saved if people just unplugged things when not in use.
