50 Years Ago: Greatest Scientific Discovery is Science Itself

Posted September 05, 2008 8:43 AM

From Scientific American:

The most remarkable discovery made by scientists is science itself. The discovery must be compared in importance with the invention of cave-painting and of writing. Like these earlier human creations, science is an attempt to control our surroundings by entering into them and understanding them from inside. And like them, science has surely made a critical step in human development which cannot be reversed. We cannot conceive a future society without science.

And look at how long it took us to even realize we had discovered science! I'll bet the first cave-painters knew they were onto something right then, and the first writing, although it hasn't likely survived, was phenomenal in its day. But science progressed for centuries without being noticed as "science". Or maybe that should be "Science".

'a systematic alchemist' ????

Thats not right! A proper alchemist, like ME, is someone who just mixes stuff up to see what happens. A successfully alchemist is someone who knows exactly when to dive out the window before the bubbling mixture in the beaker goes critical and laminates your eyeballs to the back of your head!

It is not a window. There has not been a pane in it for years.

By Beaker you mean the glass lining in the heavy steel mortar under the hole in the roof?

Systematic is "if that don't work get a bigger hammer" and checking you notes so you don't waste time mixing up the same stuff as last week when you had to dive out the hole in the wall. You add more stuff to slow down or speed up reaction. (when speeding up reaction use remote mixing or hole in wall becomes short barreled gun or pad and fire proof pants).

Systematic is hard learned response to saying Oh S%$t too many times.

Most of what is termed "Science" is science.

Theories are quite OK, until they are proven wrong.

Over the recorded history there have been many theories, and the facts still are a'knockin' those theories down like

Kind Regards....

Sure, and that's the scientific method - propose an answer, then figure out if it really IS the answer!
