Taxi Drivers 'Have Brain Sat-Nav'

Posted September 15, 2008 10:25 AM

From BBC News | Technology | World Edition:

Scientists find evidence for an inbuilt "sat-nav" system in the brains of London taxi drivers. They used magnetic scanners to explore the brain activity of taxi drivers as they navigated their way through a virtual simulation of London's streets. Different brain regions were activated as they considered route options, spotted familiar landmarks or thought about their customers. The research was presented at this week's BA Science Festival. Earlier studies had shown that taxi drivers have a larger hippocampus - a region of the brain that plays an important role in navigation. Their brains even "grow on the job" as they build up detailed information needed to find their way around London's labyrinth of streets - information famously referred to as "The Knowledge". "We were keen to go beyond brain structure - and see what activity is going on inside the brains of taxi drivers while they are doing their job," said Dr Hugo Spiers from University College London. The scientists used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to obtain "minute by minute" brain images from 20 taxi drivers as they delivered customers to destinations on "virtual jobs". The scientists adapted the Playstation2 game "Getaway" to bring the streets of London into the scanner. After the scan - and without prior warning - the drivers watched a replay of their performance and reported what they had been thinking at each stage. "We tried to peel out the common thoughts that taxi drivers tend to have as they drive through the city, and then tie them down to a particular time and place," said Dr Spiers.

You should watch the film, "The Knowlege", this is a film of what once was practised by the London taxi drivers before they got their Taxi lisence.

All I can say is, my 'shat nav' doesn't cut people up, moan, complain, bitch, swear, shout abuse or overcharge.

(it is programmed to say; 'turn right you will...' in Yoda's voice, making it far more attractive then a London cabbie)

I presume a similar mental methodology occurs in cabbies in large cities the world 'round. What about those of us who are frequent drivers in several cities? I know I develop a mental map as I find my way around, and it improves with use. What about anyone else?

It is a well researched fact that men have better spatial abilities with formation of a mental map for locations.

Probably designed for when men went out hunting-gathering, and needed that ability to find their way, while the women stayed at home, looking after children.

<"....We tried to peel out the common thoughts that taxi drivers tend to have as they drive through the city....">

I fail to see how that could be done.

Nice to see Sid James at the helm of a London taxi.

Kind Regards....

Hi Sparkstation,

I believe your thinking on this one is right!

Having travelled everywhere doing my job I was sent in 1984 to Rome, having loaded up my car I set off from my then home town of Bergen in Norway to drive down to Rome. Having got to northern Denmark I realized that I had left my Europe atlas at home, no problem, I just followed the road signs heading south to Germany, once there I headed south towards the Swiss boarder.

Having reached the boarder of west Switzerland I headed for Zurich, and from there I followed the road sign to Milan via the Gothard tunnel then followed the road south along the west coast of Italy towards Rome.

This is the route I took; Bergen, Oslo, ferry to Friderikshavn Denmark, Flensburg, Hamburg, Hannover, Kassel, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Zurich, Milan, Genoa, Livorno, Rome. Not exactly as the crow flies, but it got me there in two days driving!

Spencer.
