Clean This Car

Posted September 16, 2008 2:39 PM by Jaxy

Over the course of a lifetime, people spend days washing the outsides of their cars. But for every automotive exterior, there is an interior waiting to be pampered. Not only can an unkempt interior lead to misplaced items and unfortunate stains, but it can lead to theft or loss.

Even the most careful drivers forget to remove their precious cell phones or GPS tracking systems from view, but it is a necessary ritual. If you thought that slyly placing your jacket over your electronics while you're shopping or working will stop a thief, listen to this news flash. It isn't going to work.

Although cleaning a car's interior may be tedious, removing accumulated items from your car can save you a lot of hassle. So remove items that can be seen through the windows. If you can't store certain items in the glove box or center console, they probably don't belong in your car. If necessary, use a container to store things in your trunk. Emergency supplies such as road flares are good to have. You can also buy a car kit from a store (or on-line), or assemble one yourself.

There are a few things that I would recommend keeping in your car, the first of which is napkins or moist towelettes. Moist towelettes are especially crucial if your find that your hands are sticky; the last thing you want to do is to get a sticky mess on the seats. If you don't believe me, take a two-year old to Dairy Queen and let me know how that works out. I also have microfiber cloths in case something spills and I need something super absorbent.

Keep the owner's manual on-hand along with your registration and insurance. These things are crucial to have in your car at all times. I also recommend having "car totes" or a bag to place objects in if you suddenly acquire items and need quick and organizational storage.

Those are just a few things that would be nice to have handy in a car. What do keep in your car that is helpful to have or essential during a crisis?

I really hate cleaning the inside of my car, but right now I don't have anything worth stealing in there - only some scratched CD's & miscellaneous papers. However, I have to go to downtown Albany (NY) twice a week and leave my purse and other personal belongings in there for a couple of hours. My solution? Hide those things in the trunk. [Junk in the trunk, lol]

Also, the emergency items that you've listed are good examples of what should be in your car. I also would add a bottle (or two) of water, and a blanket - bad enough to have car trouble in the winter, wouldn't want to freeze. I believe my Mom also keeps a spare set of clothes in a bag in the winter. We are from snow country, so its good to have the option to stop and stay elsewhere (hotel, friend, etc) then have to go home.

I buy used vans from a rental business. $2k at most --plus 1k to rebuild transmission.

They last me 4 to 5 years and I may change the oil 4 times. If one breaks down I sing the title, tape title to steering wheel and pull my tags and stick out my thumb for a rdie.

FREE VAN -- you tow it you own it.

Wash it-- clean it -- after 6 kids have abused it --- not me

ArmorAll wipes for removing dust and making everything shiny again.

Leftover napkins for cleaning up messes.

Shoes for all occasions, extra sunglasses in case I lose mine or a friend forgot to bring a pair, and spare change are also important.

Radar detector (which I'm bad about leaving up all the time), phone charger, and iPod cable.

Portable air compressor, tire gauge, mini tool kit, blanket and pillow.

I have tinted windows so I just stash my stuff in the back seat and nobody can see what I've got in there (with a mini SUV I don't have a trunk anyway). I am guilty of having way too much in my car. Usually I have a change of clothes with layers for all weather (in upstate NY it's necessary), grad school stuff, dog leashes, and a saddle and riding helmet and boots.

I keep a can of fix-a-flat in my car. My daily commute takes me through mountains where the road doesn't have much of a shoulder, so I'd rather not spend a lot of time crouching by the side of the road.

Hi Jaxy - Great advice. The wipes are key, especially for those folks with young children like you describe. I keep a milk crate in my Civic's trunk for storage. Reminds me of the recall story from Honda in the 90's for seat belts, and why the manufacturer initially resisted (messy cars). Will be following your tips this week. - Larry
