Before Jonathan Kuniholm, a marine re­­serv­­ist, was shipped off to the war in Iraq, he and three friends formed a research and development firm they called Tackle Design. The four men had worked together in an industrial engineering class at North Carolina State University (N.C.S.U.), and, filled with youthful enthusiasm, they hoped their fledgling company could survive on jobs that were interesting and beneficial rather than simply moneymaking.

Absolutely brilliant article.

Shows the best of engineering and the worst of a blinkered system which is tied in to profit and marketing bull (the..'You're the 20th person I've told there's no demand for it' mentality)

Should be compulsory reading.

The article also shows how difficult it can be to fight against a failing system, but that it still can be done.

Kudos to all that are involved in the project.
